Millions of conservatives around the world celebrated the victory—slim as it was—of conservative Abelardo De La Espriella in Colombia's presidential election.
It was another feather in the cap of President Trump and his policy of defunding USAID; at least that's what many suspect. Since USAID's defunding, the political right has suddenly enjoyed a dramatic uptick in its political fortunes.
Breaking News: Abelardo De La Espriella, a right-wing outsider backed by President Trump, appears headed for a narrow win in Colombia’s presidential race. His victory would return Colombia to conservative rule after four years under Gustavo Petro. https://t.co/1798Sj6fmb

While no Pravda Media outlet has made this fairly obvious connection, it's pretty hard not to notice a trend. Since USAID's defunding, there have been seven "far right," to use the vernacular chosen by the media, candidates who have won elections in Latin America.
7 Latin American elections since USAID was defunded:

Perhaps it is a coincidence. Perhaps it is just the pendulum of politics swinging. Or, as Colombia's current president alleges, it is actually a Jewish plot to take over Latin America and turn it into a Zionist colony.

Colombian President Gustavo Petro declares the results of the ongoing Presidential Runoff Election to be invalid, following the loss of left-wing ruling party candidate Iván Cepeda and close win of Trump-backed far-right candidate Abelardo de la Espriella. Petro claims that polling data and software was “compromised” by Israel, requesting an investigation into irregularities by the Rama Judicial.
He may have a point. After all, it is well known that Bibi Netanyahu lies awake at night, worried more about who will be Colombia's president than what is happening in Switzerland right now. And nobody denies that the Mossad is one of the best intelligence agencies in the world.
If it can get Hezbollah to wear pagers with explosives in them, what can't it do?
Outgoing Colombian President Gustavo Petro claimed that Israel had rigged the presidential elections that took place on Sunday in a post to X/Twitter, following his loss to right-wing candidate Abelardo De La Espriella.
"I warned that the Bautista brothers' software was vulnerable, according to the 2018 State Council ruling, and that it should be replaced with publicly available software," Petro wrote on X, adding that he had requested an audit of the software ahead of the elections, but that it had not been allowed.
"Well, today we have evidence of a change in the IP addresses of several servers belonging to the National Registry. This means that the software was compromised, and others entered data for polling stations and voting centers," he said. "The only entity in the world capable of doing that is the State of Israel."
Petro added that he plans to pass the information along to the judges as soon as possible so they can conduct "the expert audit of the electoral software that has not yet been performed" while the votes are being counted.
"I request a recount of all polling stations and a recount of all votes, along with a study of the vulnerabilities in the electoral software and the polling stations that were affected."
There is, of course, a counter-explanation for Espriella's victory: the contrasting platforms of the two candidates. One promises a continuation of left-leaning, soft-on-crime policies, and the other a crackdown, more akin to El Salvador's policies.
De La Espriella, 47, has proposed a tough crackdown on crime, an end to peace talks with armed groups, and a boost to Colombia's oil and gas sector.
Iván Cepeda Castro, 63, a leftist competitor in the presidential race, vowed to continue Petro's policies, and is a former rebel and the country's first leftist president.
These policies include state pension payments for the poor, union-backed labor reforms, peace talks with armed groups that have fought the state for decades, and a moratorium on new oil projects.
Not to mention the promise to expand oil and gas production, which might just be attractive to Colombians who are less worried about global warming than about prosperity.
What's surprising is how close the election was, with less than a percentage point difference between the candidates.
What Petro's accusation shows is that blaming outcomes you don't like on the Jews is a useful, all-purpose explanation for why bad things happen.
Same as it ever was.
