Sydney Sweeney is the gift that keeps on giving.

No, I am not referring to her extraordinary...genes, or jeans, or anything like that. Rather, it's the fact that she DGAF about all the fake controversies swirling around her.

In a world where celebrities either spend all their time lecturing us about how we should think and act or who walk on eggshells and instantly apologize to the woke mob when they step out of line, she pushes back when asked to do either of those things.

It's refreshing and winning her an awful lot of fans.

Ironically, I have no particular opinion about Sydney Sweeney's acting ability because I have never seen her act, and I actually think that jeans outfit she wore in those commercials was rather unflattering. What makes her interesting enough to write about is how countercultural she is.

Yes, we are the counterculture now, to the extent that the dominant cultural movement is, unfortunately, still woke. For all the progress we are making in beating back the madness of the past decade, we have a long, long way to go. Just as the left took over the culture through a long march through the institutions, it will take a similar, although hopefully less long, march through the institutions to retake the cultural high ground.

In a bizarre way, our advantage turns out to be the extremism and arrogance of the left. It is so off-putting that a lot of people who would be inclined to stay on the sidelines are getting involved. Not enough people, yet, but it is happening.

It's hard to say what Mamdani's election will mean to the culture war, and especially how long it will take for his rise to prominence to translate into a backlash. Unlike the failures of Brandon Johnson in Chicago, which have had little impact on people outside the city, Mamdani is already a major figure in the public consciousness, largely due to his charisma, which Johnson lacks.

AOC and Mamdani are already the most visible members of the Democratic Party. Not in the sense that you see them the most, but rather because they leave the biggest impression. It is hard to look away because they have the energy that Chuck Schumer, Hakeem Jeffries, or even Gavin Newsom could only dream about.

They will be the lightning rods for the left, just as Trump is for the right.

What does that have to do with Sydney Sweeney? Well, her refusal to be canceled or apologize, and the fact that American Eagle's ability to thrive has given other corporations an excuse to begin pushing back, and they are. The fact that Condé Nast felt comfortable dumping the politics in Teen Vogue is just one example.

Politics is downstream of culture, and we are finally on offense and taking territory back.
