Democrats are into double digits voting against reopening the government in what we now call the "Schumer Shutdown."
There are likely to be many more votes to do so, too. Gamblers on Polymarket are predicting the shutdown will continue well into November.
Three more weeks. Not that this matters much to most people outside of government, aside from people who depend on government money. It is a bit of an annoyance, but hardly a disaster.
Still, Democrats are trying to lay the blame on Trump and the Republicans. The party of government is keeping the government shut down, pointing fingers and hoping that nobody notices that it is they who are the authors of this particular policy.

The strategy isn't working particularly well. As Ed wrote yesterday, voters are about evenly split between blaming Republicans and blaming Democrats, and the trend is not the Democrats' friend. The longer the shutdown goes on, the worse for Democrats things look.

Still, the shutdown is the strategy they have chosen, and the Democratic base doesn't want it to end. They want blood in the streets and will crush any Senator who gives in.

But Democrats have a significant problem: they have no leader of the party, and that means their messaging has no discipline. There are 281 Democrats in Congress and the governor's seats. Keeping them all on the same page is like herding cats, especially since each of them feels the need to say different things to different constituencies.
Donors want to hear strategy and tactics; federal workers want their paychecks and the pain to end; SNAP recipients want their loot; and nonprofits want the greenbacks to keep flowing.

Katherine Clark, a Democratic whip in the House, was clearly giving her "strategy and tactics" answer on why keeping the government shut down is a vital part of the Democratic strategy to get some leverage in their losing battles with Trump, and in doing so publicly she gave away the game to the people who want or need this shutdown to end quickly.

The Democrats have depended on voters who have trusted their messaging that they are the party of compassion and children, but their brand has been so tarnished over the years that they can no longer do so. Sure, the AWFLs will stick with them because they are awful and live on a diet of anger, but a good chunk of Democrat voters have grown cynical. Democrats are the party of health care, education, infrastructure, and all things good, but people have noticed that their policies are terrible.

Most aren't turning to the Republicans--most have a deep hatred of all things Red, especially Trump--but they don't believe in the Democrats either.

Meanwhile, the pain the Democrats are inflicting falls mainly on Democratic Party constituencies, who are getting angrier the longer this goes on, and not doing either the party or themselves any favors by sounding exactly like the layabouts that people don't want to pay the bills for.
There are hundreds of videos of SNAP benefit recipients promising to steal food, or complaining that they have been depending on the program for a decade or more, and worried now that they might lose a month of benefits.

The Democrats are reaping what they sowed. Sure, Americans want the shutdown drama to end and dislike the minor annoyances, but at least Trump is trying something different.
