'Ceasefire Now' People Are Angry at...Ceasefire

There is no angrier group of people in the West right now than the people who have been screaming about Israel committing a "genocide" and about the need for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza.

Among Democrats who have been the most critical of Israel, there is near silence. With the exception of John Fetterman, who himself is rather surprised that his fellow Democrats seem so unhappy by the successful negotiations to end the hostilities in Gaza, the only Democrats who are not completely sullen are the few who are trying to claim that Biden freed the hostages.

Anthony Blinken, for instance, seriously claimed that it was Biden who developed the peace plan (hint: it wasn't); even Hillary Clinton gave Trump some credit, but she is as relevant to the core constituencies of the Democratic Party that she may as well be Paul Ryan for all she matters to the base.

The people who are truly unhappy are all those "protesters" who have been marching in the streets. They never wanted a ceasefire; what they wanted was for Israel to be destroyed. "From the River to the Sea" and all that.

Hundreds of thousands have taken to the streets in Europe, while the mood in America among the Hamas folks is generally more somber, if still angry.

There are, quite literally, protests AGAINST the ceasefire. I think the reason is simple, and The New York Times accidentally laid it out the other day: with the release of the hostages, Hamas has lost the biggest leverage against Israel. As long as they held the hostages, they had something over the Israelis, and that is what Hamas' allies outside Gaza really cared about.

Hamas gave up that leverage because the organization was on the brink of total collapse; outside Gaza, the fact that Hamas was so damaged is seen as a catastrophe.

The whole "genocide" claim was utter crap, and always was. Everywhere you look online, you see celebrations in Gaza by Palestinians who are glad to see the Israeli troops pull out, and with few exceptions, the Gazans who are celebrating aren't just healthy, but actually quite fat. The UN now admits that its warehouses are overflowing with months of food to distribute in Gaza.

The Arab world's leaders are all far more enthusiastic about this deal than Western anti-Israel influencers. The fact is that Israel could be a good trading partner for these countries, while Palestinians are warmongers who have been holding back normalization in the region for decades. Everywhere they settle they create disruption and civil war, which is why no Arab country has welcomed Palestinian refugees from Gaza during the war.

No group is less happy about the ceasefire than Western leftists, and they are making their unhappiness known. Even as many Gazans celebrate the ceasefire (some because of war weariness, and some because they want breathing room to rearm for the "struggle"), anti-Israel activists are angrier than ever. That is true for the right-wing antisemites, as well, although there are far fewer of them, as Trump has rallied his base to support Israel, while Democrats have bought into the anti-Israel left.

The "ceasefire now" crowd never wanted a ceasefire to help Gazans; they wanted it because Israel was winning the war, and they wanted that to stop immediately. They are unhappy because it looks like Israel has won the war for all intents and purposes, and without the fake "genocide narrative," they will lose their leverage. 

With Muslim countries backing the Trump deal, chances are that Hamas is permanently weakened. At least that is their fear. 

Israel will survive, Hamas may not. And that angers them terribly.
