Stephen A Smith: Conservatives Are Right to Demand Kamala Talk to Press

Members of the media are waking from their slumber, at least a bit.

First, Jim Acosta made a bit of noise about Kamala Harris refusing to answer any questions, and now Stephen A Smith went on a rant about Kamala hiding from any scrutiny.

It's about time. I guess the media is getting a bit bored and embarrassed about carrying so much water for Kamala without getting any love back from her or her campaign.

It's hard to know what has broken the dam, and as of now, it is just a trickle of criticism. But at least the issue of Kamala's failure to face a single question in her campaign for the presidency is now being openly discussed in the media.

Perhaps this silence from the campaign is an explanation for why the mainstream media has also been writing some less-than-flattering stories about Tim Walz, and those are coming at a faster pace than the complaints about Kamala.

The critiques of Walz are coming in fast and furious and at vulnerable spots in his record. While the Democrats are focusing on ridiculous issues such as J.D. Vance's High School antics and having gotten drunk once in college, Walz is being dragged through the coals over his long record of lying not just about his service but about everything.

This is, I think, a shot across the bow by the media to the Harris campaign. The cool kids want in on the action, and the failure of both Walz and Harris to chum the waters and feed the sharks does have consequences.

The media has to fill its pages and airwaves, and part of the deal between the Democrats and the media is that they get some love and access to power. Freezing them out can have consequences.

The Walz problem is, perhaps, worse than the Harris failure to soothe the savage breasts of the reporters. Kamala's vulnerabilities are on the issues--and the media will protect her as much as they can on those--and her inability to speak a coherent sentence--which they cannot.

The media needs her to talk to justify their existence, so that is Kamala's problem, not theirs. They will help on her record as much as they can, as long as she holds up her end of the deal.

Walz, though, I think has become fair game. They may couch their hits in some mushy language, but I think his background is such a target-rich environment, and the issues are juicy enough that they feel OK roughing him up a bit. Especially since he avoids the media as much as Kamala does. They don't know him or owe him anything. Since Walz is prickly when challenged, it may also be that he has offended some of the primadonnas.

In any case, the honeymoon may be ending, and if the DNC is surrounded by riots, the "If it bleeds, it leads" ethos may be a problem for the Democrats.

The media is aligned with the Democrats, but they have spent a lot of effort helping the party and Kamala out and have gotten nothing in return for their efforts.

They want a return on their investment.
