It only took seven years, hundreds of thousands of repetitions of falsehoods, and a presidential campaign predicated on a lie for Snopes to fact-check a claim about President Trump praising White supremacists. 

I would say "better late than never," but there is such a thing as "far too little and far too late."

Joe Biden has pushed this hoax for years now, and even claimed he ran for president because Trump called White supremacists very fine people. Few people in the media ever contradicted this narrative, even though there was no question that it was false. 

It will always be funny to me when Biden says how Trump's "very fine people on both sides" line from Charlottesville was his inspiration to run for president.

Out of nowhere, Snopes put out a fact check--in the middle of 2024!, seven years after the events in question, noting that Trump never said what nearly every single Democrat and MSM "journalist" has claimed he did.

Democrats and the MSM have been pushing this lie and making political hay with it for years, and Snopes never even took notice of it until now. 

Why? I know why they ignored it--they liked the political effects that the lie was having. Why are they correcting it now? I have no earthly clue. 

They have, though corrected the record, although they have done so while carefully condemning Trump as a racist--at the behest of liberals who objected to their simple refutation of the original slur. 

Editors' Note: Some readers have raised the objection that this fact check appears to assume Trump was correct in stating that there were "very fine people on both sides" of the Charlottesville incident. That is not the case. This fact check aimed to confirm what Trump actually said, not whether what he said was true or false. For the record, virtually every source that covered the Unite the Right debacle concluded that it was conceived of, led by and attended by white supremacists, and that therefore Trump was wrong.

Even now, they can't just let the simple facts speak for themselves. In a world where Trump exists, Trump must be excoriated for existing. 

We can all speculate about why Snopes decided to drop this new fact check, which first appeared last Thursday and was "corrected" with a special condemnation of Trump the next day, but what is crystal clear is that Snopes did NOT correct this falsehood--this total hoax--for seven years because doing so contradicted a narrative at the heart of the Democrat attacks on Trump for years. 

Even after 7 years Biden still refers to this non-incident because it has, until recently at least, worked well for him. It gets AWFLs worked up, although the polling indicates that Black voters don't buy the narrative anymore. At least not younger Black voters.

I'd be very interested to know what you guys think is the reason for Snopes' suddenly taking notice of this hoax. It is mysterious to me why they would jump into the presidential race this way.
