Merrick Garland disgusts me and should disgust you too

Merrick Garland is testifying before the House Judiciary Committee.

His performance is a tour de force. It is difficult to imagine that anybody has consistently lied to Congress more and gotten away with it. Alejandro Mayorkas is in the running considering the sheer quantity of lies, but Garland beats Mayorkas by a mile when it comes to verbal dancing. Mayorkas is a plodding liar, while Garland is a master sophist, which is why Obama wanted him on the Supreme Court.

It’s hard to say which of the two presents a greater danger to America. Mayorkas threatens our economy and our physical security as a nation; Garland wields a dagger that plunges into the heart of our democratic values.

Both men should be impeached, removed, and jailed for perjury. None of those three things will happen, and you could argue that impeachment would be worthless because the process is now purely partisan. The hope that Congressmen and Senators would rise above party loyalty to defend the integrity of the country is so laughable that not a single person believes that any government official would be held accountable for anything other than stabbing his own party in the back.

Perhaps 10-15% of our elected representatives have any integrity left. A few do, and one suspects that their colleagues disdain them for their naivete. Once a critical mass in any institution gives up on defending it one becomes a fool for not joining in the plundering.

Garland has spent nearly 3 years as the government’s chief lawyer using his office to defend not the United States or its legal system but the president of the United States. His job is to defend the institutions of our country as much as it is Mayorkas’ to defend our territory and our people. His high-flown rhetoric, his faux outrage, and his often-failing memory on important issues are diversions from the now irrefutable fact that the Justice Department acts as an adjunct to the Biden campaign and an enforcer for the Left’s agenda.

The power of the Justice Department is used to cover up crimes committed by Democrats and invent crimes out of thin air–being Catholic or pro-life, for instance–if the Administration or its allies find it inconvenient. Garland’s FBI and US Attorneys devote themselves to shielding Democrats from scrutiny, silencing opponents, investigating the innocent, and persecuting only the malefactors the administration doesn’t like. The FBI now has a small army instigating crimes and infiltrating conservative institutions.

Even today, after a report that the FBI had so many informants in the January 6th rioters that they needed to do an audit, Garland insisted he didn’t know if there were any there. If that isn’t perjury, nothing is. Nothing will be done. Garland does little more than smirk when spewing his falsehoods.

No doubt the MSM will chime in after these hearings to criticize Republicans for spreading baseless conspiracy theories and beating up on poor Judge Garland, who is simply defending democracy™ through his impartial and exemplary enforcement of the law.

That is because the MSM, too, has become one of the vultures tearing apart the body politic for their own benefit.

Having grown up in the 1970s I have vivid recollections of the Nixon impeachment hearings, and it is difficult to recognize the country in which that happened. Nixon’s crimes pale in comparison to Biden’s. His impeachment was predicated on obstructing justice, over what amounted to misdemeanor burglary charges for some of his aides. Republicans took the charges seriously and eventually demanded the resignation of the president.

Obstructing justice happens every day in the Biden administration, as does sending the FBI and IRS to harass Biden’s political opponents. Is there a peep out of any Democrat?

Well, yes. But what we get is nothing but approbation and calls for more. Defending the rule of law is alien to them. Lying is as natural as breathing. The border is secure. Afghanistan was a great success. There is one standard of justice for all.

It disgusts me.

On days like today, it is difficult to feel good about the future of our country.
