Johnny Mac’s new ad, well made and entertaining. It’s one of McCain’s two central story lines: He’s a national security hawk and he can beat the Democrats. The ad’s central flaw, however, is that it’s based on polls that don’t mean very much because they’re so far out from the actual election (Carter led Reagan at this point, and Dukakis led Bush 41 coming out of the conventions, for instance) and that McCain is also the conservatives’ worst nightmare. Electing him is no guarantee that any conservative position will be defended against a Democrat Congress. It also conveniently leaves out the fact that John McCain almost became a Democrat himself in 2001. McCain holds the distinction of being the only candidate who keeps members of both parties up at night — one side claims to fear going against him, and one side fears having to support him. Such is the life of the Maverick.
Still, it’s a good ad.
