Tis the Season for Political Correctness

There’s no better way to get in the Christmas spirit than to hear the stories of political correctness across the country.

The latest in the “war on Christmas” occurred in Marlborough, New Hampshire, but it may as well be called Who-Ville because the Grinch definitely has his claws in the town.

According to FOX25, John Fletcher, Air Force veteran and the commander of the American Legion in Marlborough, New Hampshire was forced to take down signs for the town’s annual Christmas tree lighting by Robert Malay, the SAU 29 superintendent.

Mr. Fletcher tried to distribute the flyers he made for the annual event to the local elementary schools, but the superintendent requested that the flyers not be distributed because they contained the word “Christmas” and asked for it to be revised to “holiday” tree lighting.

Each year the town of Marlborough comes together for the tree lighting festivities and Mr. Fletcher and his wife dress up as Santa Claus and Mrs. Claus to spread cheer to the local children in the community.

In an interview with the Union Leader, Mr. Fletcher said:

“A Christmas tree is a Christmas tree — it’s not a holiday tree,” Fletcher said. “It’s always been that way and I fail to understand. This political correctness is getting out of hand as far as I am concerned.”

Mr. Fletcher hit the nail on the head with this one, we are living in an overly sensitive world where any and everything is offensive.  We now have “safe spaces” on college campuses so that way coddled college students can not be offended or have their feelings hurt.

What happened to being able to freely wish people a Merry Christmas because you wanted to spread a little happiness during the joyous season?  Now, you have to worry about whether or not your greetings will offend someone.  It seems like we live in world where everyone’s hearts have grown two-sizes too small—but maybe, there’s hope after all!

In November of this year a few Simon malls across the country decided to forgo a Christmas tree and replace it with a “Glacier Santa Experience,” but there was a huge public outcry about the secular nature of the new display.  According to the Charlotte Business Journal, the SouthPark Mall in Charlotte, North Carolina reversed it’s decision and said, “We made a mistake, we’ll fix it.”

It’s truly amazing the effect that the almighty dollar has when customers are listened to and they by and large reject secular changes to a Christmas display.  For decades, children have anxiously waited in line at malls across America to visit Santa expecting a magical experience full of Christmas trees, reindeer, elves, and everything else wonderful about the season.  If there’s one thing this mall debacle accomplished it was that it proved the Christmas spirit is alive and well.

The Christmas season is meant to bring everyone together, not tear us apart.  Maybe we should all channel a little bit of Mr. Fletcher’s spirit and seek to spread joy in our towns and communities.   As for me, I will continue to wish everyone a Merry Christmas and if you don’t like it, bah humbug!
