Ouch. If you ask me, this poll is not so much an indictment of South Carolinians as it is an indictment of Joe Biden — but it doesn’t reflect well on either. According to The Daily Caller, a survey released today by Winthrop University showed that 29.3 percent of adults polled in the Palmetto State couldn’t come up with Joe Biden’s name when asked to identify the current vice president of the United States:

Almost a quarter of those surveyed had no answer to the question, three percent provided the wrong name and another three percent identified Dick Cheney.

Biden has mostly stayed out of the news of late, but did received significant coverage for predicting that Democrats would take back the House of Representatives. In the last week, he has done vice presidential things: meeting with senior advisers and administration officials, stumping at campaign events and speaking in Florida on the importance of addressing the rising cost of a college education.

In the same poll, comedian Stephen Colbert ranked tied for fifth in the list of most famous South Carolina natives. He placed behind Gov. Nikki Haley, Sens. Jim DeMint and Lindsey Graham, former Gov. Mark Sanford and Rep. Jim Clyburn.

It’s just one poll and just one state; let’s hope it’s not in any way representative of the American public at large. Either way, may it also be a reminder to voters to take their responsibility to select their government representatives seriously — at least seriously enough to know the names of presidential and vice presidential candidates and, then, the names of the ultimate officeholders. Preachin’ to the choir here, I know, but sheesh.
