George W. sends letter of support to Alabama kicker after Iron Bowl

Another in series of untelevised acts of kindness by the former president. I never want to give the famous and powerful extra credit for simply acting like human beings, but isn’t it nice to find out they’re thoughtful and kind and watch football and feel bad for kickers, just like the rest of us?

After Alabama kicker Cade Foster missed two field goal attempts and had a third blocked in the Iron Bowl loss to in-state rival, Auburn, plenty of people had nasty things to say to the senior from Texas. The loss to Auburn ended their national championship quest and the Tigers will now face Florida State in the title game.

Empathetic about the kicker’s public stumble, former the 43rd president of the United States sent this note to No. 43:

Dear Cade (#43),

Life has its setbacks. I know! However, you will be a stronger human with time. I wish you all the best.

Sincerely — another 43

George W. Bush

Foster Instagrammed the letter, adding “Framing this.”

My heart hurts for any kicker who blows it in a high-stakes situation, even when it helps my team. Don’t get me wrong, it doesn’t keep me from cheering my own team’s victory. But there’s something so raw and human about a kicker, collapsed to his knees with his hands to his helmet after failing to do the one thing he’s trained to do his whole life. This passage probably isn’t making Foster feel any better, so I’m glad he got Bush’s letter. My point is, I agree with W. and wish him the best.

Alabama QB AJ McCarron also offered some perspective:

“Cade’s a great kid,” McCarron said. “It wasn’t all his fault. Other people struggled. I love him to death and I have all the confidence in him in the world that he could go out there right now and make the kicks. The one thing about him is he needs to keep his head high and be proud.

“Like I said, football is just a game. It’s not life. Times like this people need to realize the sun’s going to rise tomorrow.”
