Fund: Blame Blumenthal's birther gambit for Trump's election

As the post-mortem of the 2016 presidential election continues, it appears Team Clinton is fixated on James Comey as the central villain in the “How could Hillary possibly lose” narrative.

Guy Benson highlighted the latest meme on this over at Townhall yesterday and blasts apart the excuse:

Democrats assured us that Comey’s ‘treachery’ or whatever would only serve to motivate Clinton’s base down the home stretch. They later claimed that his reiteration of his decision not to recommend a criminal indictment two days before the election was vindication. In truth, scapegoating the FBI Director after the fact is a naked effort to deflect blame for a Hillary’s humiliating loss, which she earned all by herself. James Comey didn’t force her to set up an unsecure, rules-violating, national security-compromising email server. He didn’t make her ignore explicit warnings that she was putting sensitive material at risk. He didn’t make her wrongly withhold and attempt to destroy thousands of work-related emails. He didn’t compel her to lie about every element of the email scandal, over and over again. He didn’t tell Huma Abedin to fail to turn over a computer with previously unreviewed emails on it. All of those actions were taken by Mrs. Clinton and her team. In fact, Mr. Comey did Hillary a large favor by recommending against charges in the first place, even though he confirmed that her conduct was grossly negligent — while averting his eyes from clear evidence of intent.

In the Kübler-Ross phases of grief, anger and denial take precedent over the eventual acceptance so it makes sense that Democrats are looking to blame someone other than their candidate who was, by the way, the most experienced person to ever run for president in the history of our great land, we were told.

So while Democrats continue to search for who to blame for their historic and crushing defeat, over at National Review, John Fund has an interesting and intriguing take on the origin story for Hillary’s involuntary subjugation to the private sector.

Fund’s article, Sidney Blumenthal, Birtherism, and the Law of Unintended Consequences, suggests that Trump wouldn’t have ever considered a serious run for president if President Obama hadn’t publicly humiliated him at the 2011 White House Correspondent’s Dinner.

And that episode occurred because Trump had taken the lead in the call for Obama to release his original birth certificate proving he was born in Hawaii.

If you accept that premise, then you have to follow the trail to the original political dirty trick that planted the “Birther seed” which grew into the Trump campaign.

And, as Fund points out, the Johnny Appleseed of the birther movement was none other than Clinton confidante Sidney Blumenthal:

Last September, former McClatchy Newspapers Washington bureau chief James Asher revealed the role that Clinton confidant Sidney Blumenthal played in stirring up the birther scandal. “He strongly urged me to investigate the exact place of President Obama’s birth, which he suggested was in Kenya,” said Asher, who at the time was McClatchy’s investigative editor and in charge of Africa reporting. “We assigned a reporter to go to Kenya, and that reporter determined that the allegation was false.”

Denials of the Clintons’ involvement in the original birther controversy come from the same aides who denied that their candidate had personally approved trolling against the Trump campaign even though an undercover video by James O’Keefe confirmed that. Other O’Keefe videos showed that operatives linked to Hillary’s campaign paid people to disrupt Trump rallies and plan voter-fraud schemes.

Fund goes on to acknowledge that Trump has denied the WH Correspondent’s dinner was a factor in his decision to run in the first place. “It’s such a false narrative. I had a phenomenal time. I had a great evening,” he told the Washington Post.

However, as the delicious aftermath of the Clinton defeat continues to unfold before our eyes, it’s fun to savor the notion that the Clinton’s favorite hit-man, Sid “Vicious” Blumenthal and his renegade, off-the-books operation over the past eight years may have been the first domino to fall in the eventual end to Hillary Clinton’s life-long ambition.
