MEDIA: Hillary's physical health is off limits, but Trump's mental health? Game On!

We’ve been lectured to in recent weeks about how it’s sexist and completely off limits to openly speculate in the media about the physical health of Democratic candidate for president Hillary Clinton.

That’s right, sexist.

Christina Bellantoni (LA Times) “I think it’s dangerous to diagnose anyone from a photograph or a piece of video or even what they are saying. Right? I am pregnant, four months into it, I haven’t told anybody. You really don’t know what’s going on with somebody’s health… You know, this is where it’s just dangerous. Yes, medical records are helpful but particularly when you have a female candidate these issues are not what we should be talking about.”

OK, fine.

But something happened in the past couple days which is a little perplexing given the media’s ongoing shaming of anyone raising the question that Mrs. Clinton might not be in tip-top physical shape. While we’re being lectured about Clinton’s physical health being off limits, we’ve seen open questioning and even an amateur diagnosis of Donald Trump’s mental health.

On Sunday, former Obama adviser David Plouffe diagnosed Trump as a “Psychopath” on NBC’s Meet the Press:

“I mean, basically, we have a psychopath running for president. I mean, he meets the clinical definition, okay,” Plouffe told Chuck Todd on NBC’s “Meet the Press” Sunday.

Plouffe backed up his diagnosis by listing off psychopathic symptoms that he said Trump has displayed: “The grandiose notion of self-worth, pathological lying, lack of empathy and remorse.”

To be fair, Chuck Todd pushed back on Plouffe’s on-air diagnosis, but the message was sent and the rest of the media ran with it.

Less than 24 hours later, MSNBC host Mika Brzezinski openly questioned Trump’s sanity as well:

“It’s time to hear from somebody in the mental health community, to look at this person who has been on television for months and to give us a sense of what we have going on here. And, I’m sorry, let’s just not—let’s stop pretending we’re dealing with someone who we can completely understand.”

“When you see someone who you think has problems, you know it. And there’s not anybody at this table who doesn’t think he has some sort of problem. Let’s ask the questions. Let’s do this at this point. Let’s set up someone and ask the … questions.”

“Does anyone think that’s completely outlandish and only because I have some sort of weird, snarky slant to it and I want to be smart? I think there’s an issue there.”

And then the entire, lovable crew at the Morning Joe table sipped their Starbucks and openly speculated about the need for a mental health examination of the billionaire Republican nominee.

So, Hillary’s physical health is off limits and Trump’s mental health is worthy of open debate.

Good to know the new rules.
