There was a riot in Frayser, Tennessee, a suburb just north of Memphis, on Wednesday night in which 36 officers and deputies were injured. From Fox 13:

Memphis police, Shelby County Sheriff’s Office and The Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives agents tried to control the crowd.

Officers were seen in full riot gear and used megaphones to try and disperse the group.

Rocks were thrown at police. MPD cars were hit with chairs, as rows of law enforcement tried to control the madness.

MPD Police Chief Michael Rallings said at least 25 officers and deputies were injured during the violent confrontation. He said the injuries were mostly minor., however, a few were “serious.”

Police later updated that total to 36 officers and deputies combined from the agencies who responded who suffered injuries.

It all started with an officer-involved shooting of a 20-year-old man named Brandon Webber. From WREG 3 in Memphis:

Officers with the U.S. Marshal Service’s Gulf Coast Regional Fugitive Task Force came into contact with Webber, who was wanted on multiple felony warrants as he was getting into a vehicle in the 2000 block of Durham in Frayser on Wednesday.

The details of the charges in those warrants was not immediately clear, but Shelby County District Attorney General Amy Weirich said the warrants were for “violent felony offenses, from an incident that occurred June 3, 2019, in Hernando, Miss.”

A source close to the investigation confirmed the charges are related to an incident in which a Hernando man was shot and his car stolen by a man. The suspect had met the victim on Facebook and was test-driving the vehicle after saying he wanted to buy it.

While officers attempted to stop Webber, he reportedly rammed his vehicle into the officer’s cruisers multiple times before jumping out with a weapon. The officers opened fire, striking and killing the man.

Once he’d been shot, the Marshal Service called Memphis PD for help, but up to that point, the Memphis police hadn’t been involved.

Old Allen Station officers received a call for assistance from the US Mashals regarding a shooting that had occurred in the 2000 block of Durham. MPD is now on the scene assisting with traffic control. No MPD officer was involved in a shooting. This is an active scene.

None of which mattered to the people who gathered and began to riot over Webber’s death.

The things being thrown were bricks:

A cameraman working for ABC 24 in Memphis was also injured:

Memphis PD said 36 officers and deputies received mostly minor injuries though six officers were transported to a hospital.

A total of 36 MPD officers and SCSO deputies suffered minor injuries during this incident due to bricks and rocks being thrown at them. Several officers were transported to the hospital in non-critical condition. All officers have been released from the hospital.
