Sen. Lindsey Graham continues to scorch the earth in defense of Judge Kavanaugh. Today, he was confronted by a protester who began shouting at him as he turned to talk with the media. “You’ve humiliated this guy enough and there seems to be no bottom for some of ya,” Graham said to the woman protester.
The protester responded with something about a polygraph and Graham turned over his shoulder and replied, “Why don’t we dunk him in water and see if he floats.” That’s a reference to the infamous test for witches in which you throw someone into a body of water and if they float they’re guilty. If on the other hand they sink, well, that proves they were innocent (though unfortunately they’re probably also drowned by that point). Monty Python famously mocked this in a scene from the Holy Grail.
But Graham was just warming up. “The bottom line here: process. No Democrat except one, maybe two are going to vote for Brett Kavanaugh. Most all Democrats have made up their mind,” he said.
“Senator Hirono said ‘well the goal here is to delay the hearing past the midterm so we can fill the seat.’ Now she was foolish enough to say that, are we smart enough to believe her?” Graham said.
He concluded by saying, “It will never be enough. If you don’t believe he’s a gang-rapist. If you don’t believe he’s a stumbling, bumbling drunk, serial sexual predator, maybe you’ll believe he lied about how much he drank in high school [or] that he threw ice at a party…Enough. Enough all ready.”
Graham has really been chewing the scenery in the past week, starting with his passionate statement during Kavanaugh’s testimony. He went on air and said if some people didn’t like him working with President Trump he didn’t “give a s**t.” Yesterday Graham brought up Bill Clinton’s treatment of his accusers at an event hosted by the Atlantic. When the crowd booed he replied, “Go boo yourself.”
I think the reason Graham’s profile is taking off at this moment is that he’s captured some of the conservative zeitgeist surrounding the Kavanaugh nomination. The GOP made a good faith effort to hear from Kavanaugh’s first accuser and to take the partisan posturing out of the questioning (at least their side of it). That effort has been met with unrelenting bad faith from Democrats (there are a couple of exceptions) who, as Graham points out, have said openly they are playing a game to delay this past the midterms in hopes their situation will improve. Graham has, unexpectedly, become the loudest voice saying “Enough.”
