Israeli TV reports Sunday warned that Iran was likely to launch a missile attack against the country in response to an attack Israel made in Syria last month. From the Times of Israel:

Iran is planning to retaliate for recent deadly airstrikes in Syria attributed to the Jewish state by having its proxies fire missiles at military targets in northern Israel sometime in the near future, defense officials warned on Sunday.

Tehran vowed revenge after the T-4 army base in Syria was struck in an air raid on April 9, killing at least seven members of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps. The strike was widely attributed to Israel, though Jerusalem refused to comment on it. Late last month, a second strike, allegedly conducted by Israel, against an Iranian-controlled base in northern Syria was said to have killed more than two dozen Iranian soldiers…

The understanding in the defense services is that Iran is looking to conduct its retaliation in such a way as to avoid full-fledged war with Israel, and will therefore likely not target civilian locations, according to the reports, which did not attribute the information to any specific source.

The Wall Street Journal reported last month that Israel had informed the United States about plans for the attack on T-4 before it happened.

After conferring with President Donald Trump, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu ordered a strike on the newly arrived antiaircraft battery to prevent Iranian forces from using it against Israeli warplanes carrying out increasing numbers of operations in Syria, some of these people said.

Israeli officials told the Trump administration about the planned strike in advance so that the U.S. was aware of their plans to directly target an Iranian base, according to two people briefed on the plans.

T-4 is a large air base in the center of Syria where both Iranian and Russian forces are based. Back in February, Iran launched a drone from this same base which entered Israeli airspace and was shot down by an Israeli attack helicopter. After that incursion, Israel sent two F-16s into Syria and attacked the command and control portion of the base. On the way back to Israel after that attack, one of the F-16s was shot down by anti-aircraft fire and crashed in Israel.

The other major player in the region is Russia. No Russians were harmed in Israel’s April attack on T-4 and Haaretz reports Benjamin Netanyahu will be meeting with Vladimir Putin this week to ask him to rein in Iran:

On Wednesday, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu will fly to Russia to meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin. At this meeting, Netanyahu will reiterate Israel’s opposition to Iran’s continued military consolidation in Syria and ask Putin to work to prevent it.

Meanwhile, President Trump is said to be eager to get U.S. troops out of Syria. But last month he rallied world leaders for a second missile strike in the country after chemical weapons were used against civilians. As this conflict between Iran and Israel escalates, Russia and the U.S. will inevitably be drawn in.
