Truck driver runs over multiple people in Manhattan, 8 killed (Update: Suspect named)

This just happened as I write this so there’s not a lot of solid information at this point. PIX 11 is reporting that two people were killed and several more injured by a driver at the wheel of a truck:

It appears several people were hit by a Home Depot truck around Hudson Street and Chambers Street shortly after 3 p.m.

At least five people were hurt, sources said. At least two people were killed. They may have been on bicycles.

Images at the site show what appears to be a Home Depot rental truck, i.e. the kind you rent for an hour or two to move an appliance.

A Twitter user has posted this video of what appears to be injured cyclists being attended to by regular people who have stopped and possibly some police and emergency personnel. Note this tweet says a car was responsible but I think that was just an assumption.

There are also multiple reports claiming a shooting has taken place. This appears to be the same incident but again, it’s not completely clear.

The NYPD confirms one person is in custody but hasn’t given out any more detailed information so far:

We’ve seen terror attack using trucks in Nice and Berlin so that is the first thing that comes to mind here. I’ll be updating this post as police reveal more information.

Update: ABC News has interviewed an eyewitness who says the driver of the truck hit a bus and then got out and started shooting:

This tweet includes an image of the Home Depot truck:

Update: Another eyewitness account. He describes seeing a “dude with two guns.”

Update: The death toll hasn’t been confirmed yet but there are reports it is now six people dead. Hopefully, there will be a police briefing soon on all of this.

The NY Times is confirming as many as 6 killed:

A man on Tuesday afternoon drove a pickup truck down a lengthy stretch of bike path next to the Hudson River in Lower Manhattan, striking numerous people. The vehicle collided with a school bus from Stuyvesant High School…

Officials said as many as six people had been killed and 11 injured.

Update: Fox News just now reported that the driver got out of the truck and yelled “Allahu Akbar.” Fox News is also reporting the guns in his hand were a paintball gun and a BB gun. Police shot him twice but he is expected to survive. Fox News is reporting the death toll is four. Here’s video of that Fox News report:

Update: NBC4 in New York has broadcast a video which purports to show the driver of the truck walking in the street after the attack. This does not seem to have been confirmed so take it with a grain of salt for now:

Update: CNN confirms the earlier report on Fox News. The driver was yelling “Allahu Akbar” during the attack. The FBI is taking over the case and investigating this as a terror attack.

Also, Fox News just broadcast the video above showing the driver, so it appears this is legitimate.

Fox News is also reporting the truck was rented at a Home Depot in Jersey City. Authorities are there now gathering information.

Update: The NYPD briefing is now taking place. Mayor de Blasio is introduced. He says “this was an act of terror.” He goes on to say that 8 have died and more than a dozen more have been injured.

Police identify the driver as a 29-year-old male. He was shot in the abdomen. Police are not releasing his identity yet.

The Halloween parade scheduled for tonight will still take place.

And that’s about it. Not a great deal of additional detail in this briefing. Here’s a portion of the briefing:

Update: Presented without comment.

Update: Suspect has been named as Sayfullo Saipov from Uzbekistan. From the NY Daily News:

The 29-year-old suspect, a native of Uzbekistan, was arrested after a hero police officer shot him in the right hip following a Tribeca crash between the truck and a school bus.

Saipov, who came to the U.S. in 2010 and lived in Paterson, N.J., was waving a paintball gun and a pellet gun when Officer Ryan Nash arrived. The cop opened fire when the suspect refused to drop his weapons.
