You’ve probably heard by now about Spenser Rapone, the communist West Point grad who celebrated Che Guevara and wrote “Communism will win” in his cap. He is now being investigated and a review of a Twitter feed believed to be his suggests he could be in some trouble.

Those messages seemed fairly borderline behavior given that communism traditionally endorses revolution as the means of attaining power. Yesterday the New York Post reported that the Army had opened an investigation and condemned his actions:

Army officials issued a statement Tuesday condemning Rapone’s actions.

“The U.S. Military Academy strives to develop leaders who internalize the academy’s motto of Duty, Honor, Country, and who live the Army values. Second Lieutenant Rapone’s actions in no way reflect the values of the U.S. Military Academy or the U.S. Army,” the statement said.

“As figures of public trust, members of the military must exhibit exemplary conduct, and are prohibited from engaging in certain expressions of political speech in uniform. Second Lieutenant Rapone’s chain of command is aware of his actions and is looking into the matter. The academy is prepared to assist the officer’s chain of command as required.”

But it appears Rapone may have a bigger problem that prohibitions against speech in uniform. Today the Daily Caller points out that in previous tweets the same account which posted the photos (believed to be Rapone’s) has also attacked the Vice President and Secretary of Defense:

In a tweet dated June 8, 2017, Rapone tweeted at a podcaster, stating: “Was so pumped for you to go in on Mattis on the latest ep. Definitely the most vile, evil fuck in the current administration.”…

Rapone also attacked Vice President Mike Pence in a tweet from August: “Holy s*** what world do these people live in? “Mediocre and conservative?” Pence is a fucking medieval, cold-blooded killer.”

Such statements run the risk of violating Article 88 of the Uniform Code of Military Justice. According to Article 88, “Any commissioned officer who uses contemptuous words against the President, the Vice President, Congress, the Secretary of Defense, the Secretary of a military department, the Secretary of Transportation, or the Governor or legislature of any State, Territory, Commonwealth, or possession in which he is on duty or present shall be punished as a court-martial may direct.”

According to another story at the Daily Caller, even Rapone’s father is disavowing his son’s extreme politics. “I disavow his political views and overall politics,” Richard Rapone wrote on Facebook. He added, “I am very disappointed in the direction he has chosen and as a father it greatly saddens me.”
