Second attack: Spanish police kill four terror suspects in town of Cambrils (Update)

The town of Cambrils, Spain is about 60 miles southwest of Barcelona where earlier today a terrorist drove a van through a crowd killing 13 people. Reuters reports police in Cambrils are now saying there was a second “terrorist attack.” Six civilians were injured in the attack. From the Guardian:

The health department has said that one of the six bystanders injured in Cambrils is in a critical condition.

Spanish media including El Pais are reporting that a group of assailants in the town ran over several people in an echo of the day’s earlier attack in Barcelona. This has not been confirmed by authorities. However, police have said that six civilians and one police officer were injured.

The Washington Post reports four of the attackers were shot and killed by police:

Early Friday, police said they thwarted what they thought was an attempt at a second attack, in the Catalan town of Cambrils, 60 miles southwest of Barcelona, by fatally shooting four suspects. A fifth suspect was injured. They offered no additional details. Amateur video aired by Spain’s state TVE broadcaster showed several police cars speeding along what appeared to be a seafront boulevard as people screamed, followed by a brief volley of about 10 bullets.

CNBC has a bit more detail:

During the incident in Cambrils, which is more than two hours south of Barcelona by car, six civilians and one police officer were injured, authorities said.

Spanish newspaper El País described the Cambrils incident as “a new attack” and a “second attack.” The police said on Twitter that a bomb squad is determining whether the attackers in the town carried explosive belts.

This is all just coming in so take these as early reports with the usual caveat that these reports are sometimes wrong. This video appears to show some police running in the background before multiple shots are fired:

A second video appears to show the aftermath. Three men are lying on the ground, apparently dead:

From an official Twitter account for the Catalan police:

I’ll update this post later as more details become available.

Update: So this was another vehicle attack, this time using a car. From the Guardian:

The five suspects were in an Audi A3 car, which was driven deliberately into pedestrians on the seafront in Cambrils on Thursday evening.

Police said some of the attackers were wearing what looked like explosive belts, adding that they were “working on the hypothesis that the terrorists shot dead in Cambrils could be linked to what happened in Barcelona”.

Police have reported the 5th suspect, who was injured, has now died.
