Looking back at the progressive left's treatment of Otto Warmbier

In the wake of Otto Warmbier’s death yesterday, there has been a reassessment of some of the snide, shabby and stupid things which the left published about him last year. A CNN reporter points out that Salon has already deleted its story out of shame:

Here is a sample of Wilmore’s take in case you missed it. If you need to see the entire 8-minute segment, it’s here.

If there’s any defense to be offered of Wilmore it’s that he was at least trying to be funny, though judging by the reaction from his audience, he wasn’t succeeding. You can’t say the same for HuffPost which published a story last year titled “North Korea Proves Your White Male Privilege Is Not Universal.” Here’s a sample:

As I’ve said, living 15 years performing manual labor in North Korea is unimaginable, but so is going to a place I know I’m unwelcome and violating their laws. I’m a black woman though. The hopeless fear Warmbier is now experiencing is my daily reality living in a country where white men like him are willfully oblivious to my suffering even as they are complicit in maintaining the power structures which ensure their supremacy at my expense. He is now an outsider at the mercy of a government unfazed by his cries for help. I get it.

Ebony Magazine also got in on this last year:

To be fair, these hot takes all happened before we learned that Warmbier was in a year-long coma, had serious brain damage, and before he died. But one social justice magazine was still attacking his privilege even after death:

Apparently, some on the left believe we should never feel sorry for a white man. Even if a college student is kidnapped, imprisoned and tortured by a rogue government, he is still the butt of the joke. If he is crying in obvious terror and desperation, he’s still just a figure for our amusement. We are never allowed to view him as a victim because he’s white. At least Salon was embarrassed enough to delete their story. You can’t (as yet) say the same for HuffPost.
