Melania Trump moving to the White House next week

Melania Trump will be moving to Washington next week now that Barron Trump’s school year has ended in New York. Politico reports:

With the school year over, first lady Melania Trump and the couple’s son Barron are expected to finally make their official move to Washington on June 14, according to people familiar with the planning…

The long-awaited permanent move is seen internally at the White House as potentially a major shift for a president who has grown increasingly cheerless in his job, lashing out at aides in frustration and taking out his anger over how he thinks he is being treated on Twitter.

No one expects Melania Trump to be a fail-safe against the message-destroying morning tweets that Trump often starts his day with — there is an understanding in the White House that no family member has the power to control the president.

The story meanders for a while but the gist is that Melania probably won’t keep Trump from going off on Twitter but she is seen as someone who offers him good counsel and also as someone whose opinion Trump values highly. So while we probably won’t see a big change in Trump’s approach, there might be a shift as the First Lady settles in at the White House.

Toward the end of the story, there’s also an update on the infamous hand slap, which became a major story during Trump’s first international trip as president.

The one memorable gaffe of the trip involving her — when she appeared to bat away Trump’s outstretched hand on the Tel Aviv tarmac — was not intended to be a repudiation of her husband, according to a person who has spoken to the couple about the embarrassing incident. Instead, that person said, it was the first lady being attuned to protocol and pushing away what she saw as an inappropriate gesture for an official arrival.

That this was about protocol was suggested by some observers at the time but many seemed more interested in speculating about the soundness of Trump’s marriage. One author even wrote a piece titled, “Melania’s Swat Proves She Hates Donald Just as Much as America Does.” If nothing else, maybe Melania’s move to the White House will temper some of that kind of speculation.
