Update: The Daily Beast highlights a Facebook post by Broward County Commissioner Chip LaMarca. Apparently the reason this happened at the baggage claim is that the shooter had the gun in a checked bag and retrieved it there:

The shooter was a passenger on a Canadian flight with a checked gun. He claimed his bag and took the gun from baggage and went into the bathroom to load it. Came out shooting people in baggage claim. There were 13 total shot, 5 dead, 8 transported to hospital.

Update: There were some reports circulating of a possible 2nd shooter. Now authorities say there is no confirmation of gunshots anywhere other than the terminal 2 baggage claim area.

Update: Senator Bill Nelson has named the shooter as Esteban Santiago. On CNN, Nelson said authorities seemed sure about the name but hadn’t verified the military ID yet:

A gunman opened fire at the Fort Lauderdale, Florida international airport. The Broward County Sheriff’s department tweeted there were “multiple” fatalities and eight injured people have been taken to the hospital. One subject is in custody.
