Sunday morning Elizabeth Warren weighed in on the Dakota Access Pipeline, posting a statement on her Facebook page. So far the reaction to her statement has not been very positive with many people saying her message is too little, too late. Here’s a portion of what Warren wrote:

For months, the Standing Rock Sioux and thousands of others have opposed a pipeline that many believe risks contaminating the tribe’s water supply. What have they faced in response? Attack dogs. Rubber bullets. Tear gas. Water hoses in freezing temperatures. A 21-year-old graduate of Williams College in Massachusetts had her arm nearly destroyed. And last week, the governor directed state and local agencies to refuse emergency assistance as a way to expel the tribe and their “water protector” supporters.

Never mentioned in these lists of violent behavior: The woman protester who pulled a gun and fired 3 shots at police officers. The protesters who set cars and other items on fire in the middle of a public road. The objects thrown at police. Vandalism of construction equipment and police vehicles. And of course the trespassing on private land which is what prompted the police to respond with tear gas, rubber bullets, etc. in the first place. Back to Warren:

The fact is, we need a country where all of our children can safely drink the water and where we move away from dirty fossil fuels and build more sustainable green energy solutions…

Time is running out. Patience has worn thin. Nerves have frayed. Every day brings a chance for escalation of the violence and more injuries. The Obama Administration should step up now and work with the Army Corps of Engineers to find an alternate route to this pipeline and ways to address the concerns of the Standing Rock Sioux. Yes, there may be more work to do and it may take more money, but we need to act in good faith, deescalate this violence, and find a solution.

Warren isn’t even arguing in good faith here. She says we need to “find a solution” but re-routing the pipeline is not going to be acceptable for people whose main goal is to halt the use of fossil fuels. Like the protesters, the only solution Warren would applaud is to block the completion of the pipeline completely.

And that brings us to the last point that Warren omits from her message:  The Obama administration is over in 6 weeks. There is nothing it can do to stop this that can’t be reversed just as quickly. You’d think Warren might mention that if her concern was really the chance of an escalation of violence.

In any case, the response to Warren hasn’t been very kind. Here’s a sample of messages left on her Facebook page:

• ” Oh NOW you want to say something?? Can’t take a stand when it’s tough? Can’t stand to stand alone? What’s new with you?”
• “Waiting until the last minute to say or do anything, just like you did in the primary. You’re not a leader. You’re pathetic.”
• “You’re about 10 months late to the party. You’re a phony. Stop acting like you care.”
• “Too little, too late. Worthless.”
• “You’re several days late. Like months. So disappointing.”
• “You seemed like such a shining light! What the hell happened to you in the last couple of years?”
• “Sick of hearing you talk but not do anything!”
• “YOU ARE A JOKE TO US NOW.”
• “You’re silent for months then pop up out of nowhere with this feigned concern? Laaaaaaaaame.”
• “Jesus, don’t hurt yourself jumping on that bandwagon, Liz. Too little, too late. This should have been addressed months ago.”
• “SHE HAD ME RIGHT UP TO THE LAST PARAGRAPH AND THEN SHE LOST ME WHEN SHE TALKED ABOUT FINDING A NEW ROUTE FOR THE PIPELINE. NO !! NO NEW ROUTE, NO PIPELINES.”
