Hillary Clinton (finally) holds a press conference

The pressure finally got to Hillary Clinton. The RNC has been sending out emails every day noting the number of days since Hillary’s last formal press conference. Yesterday was day 277.

Today, Hillary gave a brief press conference on a tarmac in New York to break the streak. She took a total of six questions including one about the tightening of the polls and another about putting troops in Iraq and Syria. One of the questions was about the RNC’s take on Clinton’s performance at a forum Wednesday night. RNC chairman Reince Priebus was criticized for this tweet about Clinton’s demeanor during the forum:

That became a jumping off point for this question, “Do you think that you’re treated differently in this race because you’re a woman?” Clinton replied, “Well, I’m going to let all of you ponder that last question.” Clinton dismissed the RNC comments then defended her demeanor saying “We were talking about serious issues last night.” Hillary concluded her answer with a swipe at Donald Trump saying, “Donald Trump chose to talk about his deep admiration and support for Vladmir Putin. Maybe he did it with a smile and I guess the RNC would have liked that.”

Hillary was next asked about comments Trump made Wednesday night about an intelligence briefing he had received. Trump suggested he could tell the officials briefing him were unhappy President Obama “did not follow … what our experts said to do.” Hillary responded to a question about this by saying, “I think what he said was totally inappropriate and undisciplined. I would never comment on any aspect of an intelligence briefing that I received.”

Yes, we all know how careful Hillary is with classified material.

Finally, Clinton was asked if she was being held to a different standard by the media and how that might impact her in the debates. Clinton replied, “I have been somewhat heartened by the number of articles recently pointing out the quite disparate treatment of Trump and his campaign compared to ours— I don’t understand the reasons for it.” Hillary then cited the fact that Republicans were willing to denounce Trump’s temperament saying “they are so concerned about this man and how totally unqualified he is to be president.”

The press conference closed with Hillary once again citing a piece in Time magazine by former head of the National Counterterrorism Center Matt Olsen. Olsen’s piece cites statements of support  for Donald Trump by members of ISIS (based on a previous article in Foreign Affairs) and goes on to endorse Hillary Clinton as “the clear choice for national security.”
