Secretary of State John Kerry has an idea for dealing with terrorism: The media could stop covering it so people don’t know it’s happening.

Speaking in Dhaka, Bangladesh Monday, Kerry said, “Remember this: No country is immune from terrorism. It’s easy to terrorize.” He continued,”Government and law enforcement have to be correct 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year.

“But if you decide one day you’re going to be a terrorist and you’re willing to kill yourself, you can go out and kill some people. You can make some noise. Perhaps the media would do us all a service if they didn’t cover it quite as much. People wouldn’t know what’s going on.”

According to the transcript, this statement was followed by applause.

In July, a group of Islamic militants attacked a bakery in Dhaka killing 20 people including one American. But that attack came after several years of brutal attacks by Islamic militants using knives similar to machetes to murder people in the street. Those attacks often target secular writers and bloggers who speak out in public against radical Islam.

In other words, Islamic militants have been attacking members of the media and John Kerry is suggesting it would be better for everyone if the media would just die a bit more quietly.

It’s not exactly a surprise that the Obama administration sees the media as at raising too much ruckus about Islamic terror attacks on the media. Remember when Obama skipped the Paris unity march after the attack on Charlie Hebdo? The administration said the tight time schedule didn’t leave them enough time for security preparations to attend the event. However CNN reported at the time:

More than 40 world leaders, including the British, German and Israeli heads of state and Russia’s foreign minister, joined at least 1.5 million people on the Paris streets Sunday for a unity march that became France’s biggest-ever public demonstration.

But Obama and his administration’s top hands were nowhere to be found — an absence that triggered complaints that he missed a key leadership opportunity.

The United States appeared to have options to send to the march: Obama spent Sunday at the White House with no public events on his schedule. Vice President Joe Biden was at home in Delaware for the weekend, also with a blank public schedule. Outgoing Attorney General Eric Holder was already in Paris for security meetings — and even recorded interviews with several U.S. Sunday morning programs — but he didn’t attend the march.

A Secret Service official said the agency was not asked to draw up security plans for a potential presidential trip to Paris in advance of Sunday’s march.

The Secret Service was never even asked and Eric Holder was already there and he skipped the march as well. The U.S. was represented at the rally by the Ambassador to France.

As John Bolton suggests in this clip, Kerry’s statement may be “the perfect embodiment of exactly how they see the terror threat.”
