Hillary Clinton laughs off question about FBI investigation

During an interview Friday morning with Matt Lauer of the Today show, Hillary Clinton laughed off the possibility that she would be held accountable for the creation of a private server to handle all of her email while Secretary of State.

Toward the end of his 15 minute sit down with Clinton in a Bronx diner, Lauer raised the issue of the FBI’s email investigation. “If I say to somebody on the Republican side ‘Aren’t you nervous about what’s happening with this campaign and this division and what might happen at the convention?’ do you know what I hear a lot?” Lauer asked. He continued, “They are clinging to the hope that the way they’ll be able to deal with that is that at some time between now and the election, and they say this…they say this, that they will get to see Hillary Clinton in handcuffs.”

Hillary burst into laughter at the suggestion and then replied, “Well, Matt, I know that they live in that world of fantasy and hope because they’ve got a mess on their hands on the Republican side. That is not going to happen. There is not even the remotest chance that is going to happen.”

Hillary added, “They’ve been after me, as I say, for twenty-five years and they have said things about me repeatedly that have been proven to not only be false but kind of ridiculous.” Lauer asked how Hillary thought the FBI investigation was likely to end, “Do you think the FBI and the Justice Department write you a letter and say it was a misunderstanding? We’re sorry, carry on?”

Clinton replied, “Well, we are certainly going to carry on.” She then suggested that the FBI investigation, which reportedly involves dozens of agents, is just a security review which no one would have even heard about if she were not involved. “It is a security review and there are lots of those that are conducted in our government all the time and you don’t hear about most of them. You’ll hear about this one because, you know, it does involve me, so that’s why it gets so much attention,” Clinton told Lauer. She closed her remarks saying, “We’re moving forward. The Republicans’ fondest wishes will not be fulfilled.”

There have been some experts who suggest Clinton can and should be held accountable for “gross negligence” in the creation of the server which later was found to contain highly classified material, but even those experts have said there is little chance charges will be brought against Clinton given the politics involved. So it’s not clear which Republicans Lauer is talking with but the idea that Hillary will end up in handcuffs is probably not as widespread as his question suggests.

FBI Director Comey has repeatedly said he is working to insure the case is handled with no concession to political pressure, but once the FBI makes a report on its findings the follow through from the DOJ will be out of his hands.
