Incoming NY AG vows to make a laughingstock of her office

While it didn’t draw all that much attention in the national press, New York State elected its first black, female state attorney general in November. Letitia James will assume office next month, presumably ready to take up her duties on behalf of the residents of New York and the law enforcement community. But it’s unclear how much time she’ll have for the day to day drudgery of performing her duties. She has another agenda in mind.

In her first interview since winning the election, James set forth her priorities for 2019. She’s going to be investigating President Donald Trump and anyone “in his orbit” that she can track down. (NBC News)

New York Attorney Gen.-elect Letitia James says she plans to launch sweeping investigations into President Donald Trump, his family and “anyone” in his circle who may have violated the law once she settles into her new job next month.

“We will use every area of the law to investigate President Trump and his business transactions and that of his family as well,” James, a Democrat, told NBC News in her first extensive interview since she was elected last month.

James outlined some of the probes she intends to pursue with regard to the president, his businesses and his family members…

“We want to investigate anyone in his orbit who has, in fact, violated the law,” said James…

Much like Santa’s list of naughty children, the incoming AG has a list of things related to Donald Trump she wants to start digging into. These include Trump’s real estate holdings in New York, the Trump Tower meeting with a Russian official, government subsidies Trump received and the activities of the Trump Foundation.

On top of that, she wants to launch investigations into Trump’s family members in the state, his business associates and “anyone in his orbit.” In other words, she’s champing at the bit to start investigations into people she doesn’t even know the names of yet. All you need to do is be associated in some way with the President and you’ll make it onto the list.

I hate to be a stickler for the rules here, but is Ms. James aware that the job of law enforcement (at any level) is to review reports of crimes which have been committed and then investigate those crimes to identify suspects and prosecute them? Your job is not to launch a fishing expedition into every aspect of a particular family you harbor some burning hatred for in the hopes of turning up something illegal. That’s not how this works. That’s not how any of this works.

But there we have it. New York has elected yet another person who is less interested in doing the job they were elected to do and more concerned with their own career and political agenda. If you want to dig into the affairs of an elected official, why don’t you start with your new boss? So many of Andrew Cuomo’s cronies are either on trial or already in jail over corruption charges I’m guessing you could find something there to productively occupy your time.
