“Are things ever going to be normal again?”

Generally, when you hear that question from the woke crowd or 90% of the press corps these days it’s the complaint of the week about the President. Nothing’s normal! Don’t normalize Trump! This latest version of Presidential Derangement Syndrome shows no signs of letting up any time soon. But perhaps a better question would be to ask when the media is finally going to get over the fact that Hillary Clinton lost and return to at least the pretense of balanced (or at least reality based) coverage. In short, will the media ever be “normal” again?

No time soon from what I can tell. Take for instance today’s entry from the editorial board of the Washington Post. In a not terribly subtle broadside, they ask and answer the question, What to do with an unfit president. In case you were wondering, this doesn’t turn out to be a historical retrospective on Barack Obama.

They begin, as so many liberal outlets have been this week, by quoting and lauding Bob Corker, a man which most of the WaPo editorial board would previously have ignored if they’d seen him drowning unless they had an anchor handy to throw to him. Then they settle into what should be “done about” President Trump. The first idea is, of course, impeachment. They then immediately admit that not only is it not going to happen, but they don’t really want to see the President impeached because, “that would roil the nation and should be embarked upon only with clear justification.”

So what to do? They’ve got some ideas.

What is the right response for a congressional majority that understands its president is unfit?

It seems to us the answer falls into two baskets. First, Congress should seize the initiative on issues where it knows Mr. Trump is wrong. We’ve seen encouraging signs of this already: Congress refused to repeal Obamacare, albeit by the slimmest of margins; imposed sweeping sanctions on Russia; and has explored how to protect the independence of the special counsel. It could do far more. House Speaker Paul D. Ryan (R-Wis.) and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) must know it makes no sense to torpedo successful trade pacts with reliable U.S. allies such as Canada, Mexico and South Korea. They could, at a minimum, hold hearings to make that case. Surely congressional leaders understand the United States would weaken itself if it sharply reduced Bush-era programs to counter AIDS, polio and other diseases in Africa. Right now Congress could act to save the nearly 700,000 young “dreamers” from the deportation that would undeservedly ruin their lives. It could hold hearings on the rise of white-supremacist organizations.

The assumptions sandwiched in with the old rhetorical trick of saying, “… as I’m sure we can all agree” here are stunning. First of all, there are plenty of people who disagree with the President on this or that issue. That doesn’t mean they find him “unfit.” As far as telling Congress to “seize the initiative” on a laundry list of agenda items, weren’t they just specifically referring to the congressional majority a moment ago? I’m not sure if anyone has stopped by the WaPo editorial offices lately with any news updates, but that’s still the Republicans. The Republicans did not refuse to repeal Obamacare because they thought it was the wrong thing to do. They just couldn’t agree on how to do it and many of them are a bit soft in the spine department.

And if you they honestly think that Republicans by and large think our current trade deals are just peachy, they’re living in a fantasy world. As far as “saving the dreamers” goes, show me more than a handful that want to do that without getting some serious concessions in exchange on the border security and enforcement front. They don’t exist.

This is the result of the echo chamber which imprisons most of the mainstream media today. They actually believe that not only does the vast majority of the country agree with them, but they are ready to rise up and impose a severely liberal agenda at the first opportunity. And not once do they note that so many of those people somehow keep voting for Republicans and the agenda items they actually support are actually some (not all) of the same ones that the President is pushing for.
