Great news: Venezuela is suddenly interested in restoring diplomatic ties with America

Perhaps I was a bit too hasty in judging the foreign policy positions of the Obama administration. I mean, sure… things are pretty much going to hell in a handbasket around most of the world at the moment, but you’ve got to be able to find the silver lining in any dark cloud and this time it seems to be coming from Venezuela. Yes, it’s true. After ten years of giving us the angry cold shoulder and hurling insults at us every time we turned around, President Nicolas Madura is suddenly interested in reestablishing cordial ties with the Great Satan. Crisis-hit Venezuela is willing to restore diplomatic relations with the United States after a six-year freeze, the socialist government said Monday.

The foreign ministry’s announcement came two weeks after top US diplomat Thomas Shannon met with Venezuela’s President Nicolas Maduro in a bid to help tackle the country’s economic and political crisis.

In a message congratulating the United States on its Independence Day commemoration, the ministry expressed its “willingness to establish respectful bilateral diplomatic relations.”

The two countries have not exchanged ambassadors since 2010 due to tensions between Washington and the government of Hugo Chavez, Maduro’s mentor and late predecessor.

Gee, President Maduro. That wouldn’t have anything to do with the massive food riots tearing your country apart right now, would it? No… of course not. I’m sure you’ve finally just seen the error of your ways, as well as those of your predecessor, Hugo Chavez. But at least you’ve kept things civil all this time. I mean, it’s not like we’re going to hold a little thing like calling our President “El Diablo” against you. Perish the thought!

Honestly I’m not even sure what I’d advise Barack Obama to do with this olive branch were I in a position to provide him with input. There’s a nasty little part of me that immediately wants to tell Maduro that we’ll talk to his successor after his people storm the presidential palace, cook him and eat him for a chance at some protein. But America is the Good Guy on the world stage, right? I mean, we still give food to North Korea so it would be rather cold hearted to shut the Venezuelans out to starve just because their corrupt socialist overlord has made a mess of things.

But would that improve their lives in the long run? It’s not like their government would show much gratitude and it still wouldn’t solve the socialism problem. Perhaps we should just let them know that we’re going to think about their generous offer for a few months. By then they might be just hungry enough to insist Maduro step down on his own before we move forward.
