Among the stranger twists I’ve caught wind of in election news this week is this item from the Daily Caller having to do with new applicants for citizenship. It deals with a few different non-profit groups formed ostensibly to assist immigrants with the naturalization process, but notes that some of them seem to be actively recruiting people who are incensed by Donald Trump so they can make the deadline to vote against him in the fall. Something here just doesn’t seem right, though.

The Obama administration is supporting several non-profit groups — with federal funding through a major White House initiative — that are part of an organized effort aimed at converting green-card holders into U.S. citizens in order to vote against Donald Trump, a Daily Caller investigation reveals.

Through an initiative called Networks for Integrating New Americans initiative, which the White House formed in April 2014, the administration has partnered with the National Partnership for New Americans (NPNA), an immigration rights umbrella organization that has denounced Trump’s “hateful rhetoric.”

In a recent post to its Facebook page, NPNA asserted that green-card holders “have the potential to change America’s electorate” by gaining citizenship. The group and its executive director is also affiliated with one of the leftist groups that helped shut down a Trump rally in Chicago earlier this month.

Some of the speculation in this story sounds completely valid without a doubt. There’s no question in my mind that the Obama administration would like to get as many new citizens registered as possible for the purpose of voting, nor that the President probably dislikes Donald Trump more than all the other Republicans put together. The fact that non-profits designed to assist immigrants would want to register more Democrats is probably a no-brainer as well, since Trump’s comments about illegal aliens play in a loop on cable news.

The fact that the Director of the NPNA went on their private Facebook page to talk about “changing the electorate” is a bit dicey to be sure, but not exactly clear cut enough to call for yanking their funding. You’ve got to put quite a few puzzle pieces together before you can draw the lines from A to B to C to come up with something actionable here. Again.. that’s not to say that the people running these organizations don’t very likely feel that way, but it’s not quite as blatant as it’s being made out to be.

And yet that’s not the biggest question which the entire story brings to mind. It is currently almost the end of March in 2016. The general election is basically six months away. How fast can somebody get citizenship these days, even after getting a green card? One friend of mine who immigrated from Europe started the process in the late 90s and only became a citizen last year. There are background checks to be done, forms to be filled out, processed and returned, legal fees and court appearances. If someone isn’t already well down the glide path to taking the oath by this time I find it difficult to believe that they could actually be eligible to vote in time for this election.

That is, of course, unless the government was trying to slide in some sort of fast track option for them. If that were the case it would be a major, stop the presses type story. But I’ve seen no indication that it’s taking place and I don’t think even this White House admin would have the nerve to try.
