Stop the presses: John McAfee sweeps into presidential race

If you’re like me, most of you were probably sitting around this week thinking that we just don’t have enough people running for president. America deserves choices when it comes to our executive branch and there just isn’t enough diversity in the field. Well, your wish has been granted. If you want diversity, it doesn’t get much further off of the bell curve than this. Maverick tech veteran John McAfee has confirmed he is running for US president.

Mr McAfee, who founded an anti-virus company of the same name, filed a candidacy statement on Tuesday…

He has launched a campaign website and will share more details about his candidacy later…

“I live in a country that is governed by people largely illiterate in cybersecurity – as proven by the multiple government computer hacks.

“Yet cyber-warfare is now the means of war. My government is dysfunctional. For the 300 million other Americans – you are in the same boat with me.”

Every candidate comes with a few pluses and minuses, On the plus side, McAfee was a successful business operator for a while, he’s definitely up on cybersecurity (a hot topic these days) and at least at one point he had a lot of money, so maybe he could be a self-funder like Donald Trump. I say “maybe” because there’s really no way to know how much of that money he currently has left, given his his adventures in drug use and sexual experimentation around the world.

Also, he may have run up some sizable legal bills after he was taken into custody as a person of interest after his neighbor was murdered.

John McAfee, the antivirus software pioneer sought by police in connection with a murder in Belize, was arrested today by Guatemalan police for entering the country illegally.

McAfee was arrested with the help of Interpol agents at a hotel in an upscale Guatemala City neighborhood, Interior Minister Mauricio Lopez Bonilla said, according to the Associated Press. Guatemala will seek to have him expelled from the country, Bonilla said, according to Reuters, although there is no international arrest warrant for McAfee, and it was not immediately clear to which country he would be deported.

The former Prime Minister of Belize (where McAfee lived at the time) was willing to offer an endorsement.

“I don’t want to be unkind to the gentleman, but I believe he is extremely paranoid, even bonkers,” the politician added.

I know what you’re thinking… the primary field is already too crowded. Not to worry, folks. He’s not running as a Democrat or a Republican. He’s going with… “The Cyber Party.”

Welcome to the party, pal.
