We make plenty of news here in the United States for our “hateful policies of exclusion” when it comes to trying to keep people from illegally entering the country, but we’re actually not the only ones dealing with the issue. In merry ole’ England they’ve been having some troubles of their own. Just recently we talked about the armies of people trying to rush through the Chunnel and sneak into the island nation, and the fact that tens of thousands are managing the feat each year. (That’s when Jihadis aren’t plotting to blow it up, anyway.)

So what do the Brits do with them once they’ve arrived and settled in? Believe it or not, for all the grief America gets over how “poorly” we treat intruders, Great Britain has some fairly tough policies too. And the government doesn’t bear the enforcement duties by itself… they actually enlist private citizens and mandate their cooperation in getting rid of the unwelcome masses. (BBC News)

Landlords will be expected to evict tenants who lose the right to live in England under new measures to clamp down on illegal immigration.

They will be able to end tenancies, sometimes without a court order, when asylum requests fail, ministers say. Landlords will also be required to check a migrant’s status in advance of agreeing a lease. Repeat offenders could face up to five years in prison.

Financial support for failed asylum seekers will also end under the plans.

According to the BBC they’ve identified at least 10,000 illegals who are still not only in the country but continue to receive weekly payments for their maintenance and support, despite having had their requests to stay in the country denied. But unlike in the United States where we keep finding new and creative ways to hand out money and other benefits to those here illegally, England is at least making the effort to identify them, stop the payments and kick them out of their homes.

If you stop to think about it, their government is turning London into pretty much the opposite of a sanctuary city, at least in some regards. Rather than scrambling to find housing for illegal immigrants and passing local laws forbidding the police to work with immigration agents, the Brits are actually imposing penalties for those who rent to them. And that’s on top of the busy schedule that David Cameron had earlier this year when he was toughening up their restrictions on other alien activities.

U.K. Prime Minister David Cameron is due to announce Thursday plans for a fresh crackdown on illegal immigrants, including new legislation to allow police to seize the wages of foreigners who are working in the country after entering illegally or overstaying their visas.

In his first speech on immigration since being elected earlier this month for a second term in office, Mr. Cameron also is due to announce plans for measures to give authorities powers to evict illegal migrants from rented accommodations more quickly, extend a policy of deporting migrants before they can appeal, and satellite tracking of foreign criminals awaiting deportation, according to extracts of prepared remarks.

Why doesn’t the pro-amnesty community get up in arms about our partner in the special relationship the same way they do do with their own country? Not only do they seem to be a lot more efficient at dealing with the problem, but they’re considerably more aggressive to boot. But then, I suppose England isn’t “a nation of immigrants” so they can’t be held to the same standard.
