Trey Gowdy (R-S.C.) had a fairly simple request for Hillary Clinton which was sent along to her office last month. The committee investigating Benghazi needed her to stop by for two appearances this year. One would be to discuss her use of a private email server during her time at State and the other would be to discuss this information in the larger context of the events at Benghazi. Hillary’s response was almost equally as simple.

I’ll stop by once if I have time, but as far as the other one goes you can go whistle.

Hillary Clinton is refusing to testify twice before the House panel investigating the 2012 attacks on the U.S. government compound in Benghazi, Libya.

Clinton is willing to testify once before the House Select Committee on Benghazi, but her attorney says she will not meet the panel’s demand to come before it twice. He also criticized the panel for asking Clinton to appear once just to examine her use of a private email account while secretary of State.

“Respectfully, there is no basis, logic, or precedent for such an unusual request,” David Kendall said Monday in a letter to Rep. Trey Gowdy (R-S.C.), the select committee’s chairman.

“The secretary is fully prepared to stay for the duration of the committee’s questions on the day she appears,” he adds.

The document is a response to a summons Gowdy made late last month.

Wait… when you get summoned to testify before a congressional committee as part of an ongoing investigation, you can just tell them to take a long walk off a short pier? I wonder if everyone else knows that. Just imagine all the time and trouble we could save for people like Lois Lerner or the employers of illegal aliens if they knew they could just send back their RSVP card “with regrets.”

Hillary’s spokesperson is firing back with the usual round of denials which I initially predicted would be fairly hard to battle through. You’ve already got the full 30K emails which we deemed to be relevant. Heck, we sent you 300 that were related to Benghazi. There weren’t any more and if you don’t believe us you’re welcome to prove me wrong.

And therein lies the rub. The emails are gone and we can’t subpoena any more from recipients without knowing exactly what it is we’re asking for. You can’t just go to every person who might possibly have been in contact with Hillary Clinton during her time at State and tell them you want every email they ever received from her regardless of the content. (Or can you? An interesting question, though it would be an undertaking of massive proportions.) Basically, as I’ve been saying since her first presser on the subject, all she really has to do is stand pat and keep on denying. By this time, for all we know, that server has been gutted and converted into a decorative potted plant holder. Or it was on the last rocket that went up to the space station and is currently drifting toward the sun.

But none of that addresses the top line question here. When Trey Gowdy tells you to show up for a hearing, can you really just say no? Apparently you can in Clinton World where all things are possible and actions never have consequences.
