Durbin and Cruz hit the Obama administration for their conspicuous drone-hearing absence

Rand Paul’s epic, viral filibuster managed to kinda’-sorta’ glean at least some manner of response from the Obama administration on their drone policy, but they were majorly called out out during a Senate Judiciary hearing on Tuesday by Senators Durbin and Cruz, and it doesn’t exactly sound like The Most Transparent Administration, Evah is going all-in on cooperating with Congress on allaying their bipartisan concerns and clarifying drone policy. SEN. DURBIN: … Now, I agree with President on the need for clear, legitimate, and transparent legal framework for targeted killing. Today is the first step in the process. I do want to note for the record, my disappointment that the administration declined to provide a witness to testify at today’s hearings. I hope that in future hearings we’ll have an opportunity to work with the administration more closely. …

SEN. CRUZ: … I’d like to echo the concern that the chairman raised and the disappointment that the Obama administration declined to send a witness particularly after this hearing was delayed for one week in order to accommodate the administration’s schedule, and I am hopeful that they will provide witnesses at subsequent hearings.

But… oh hey, that’s funny — remember this, from the president’s own SOTU address in February?

That’s why my administration has worked tirelessly to forge a durable legal and policy framework to guide our counterterrorism efforts. Throughout, we have kept Congress fully informed of our efforts. And I recognize that, in our democracy, no one should just take my word for it that we’re doing things the right way. So, in the months ahead, I will continue to engage Congress to ensure not only that our targeting, detention and prosecution of terrorists remains consistent with our laws and system of checks and balances, but that our efforts are even more transparent to the American people and to the world.
