Ryan to WH: Any day now with that budget, really, feel free

House Budget Committee Chairman Paul Ryan is all set to unveil the GOP’s budget proposal next week, which he’s hinting will be more ambitious than last year’s with its plan to balance the budget in just ten years, but says is still very doable:

House Budget Committee Chairman Paul Ryan (R., Wis.) said the budget he will unveil next week will make only “modest policy changes’’  in the conservative blueprint the House approved last year even though he is now  aiming for a much more ambitious goal:  balancing the budget in 10 years.

“I wouldn’t expect any big surprises,’’ Mr. Ryan told reporters Wednesday. …

Mr. Ryan plans to release his budget resolution Tuesday and the Budget Committee will approve it Wednesday, sending it to the House floor for a vote the following week. The Senate Budget Committee is expected to act along a similar timeline to draft Democrats’ budget alternative. …

I’m sure we’ll have plenty of opportunity to hear all about how draconian and granny-cliff-tossing the entire proposal is next week, but this year’s process might be the first time in years that Democrats actually present a concrete alternative plan of their own, gasp! Even if it does nothing to fix our current fiscal insanity, at least they’re finally ready to abide by their legal duties, so that’s something, I guess.

From the executive branch, however, still no sign of that little ol’ budget the White House was supposed to produce by the first Monday in February. Via Politico:

“I find it interesting that he’s chosen to blow the deadline again, not only by a week or two, which is what we’ve seen in the past, but for an indefinite period of time and waiting for others to lead first,” Ryan said.

“The person in the White House ought to lead. That’s what presidents are supposed to do,” Ryan said. “And by delaying your budget for an indefinite period of time, [it] shows that there’s just not a seriousness of purpose to actually fixing our budget problems.”

Obama has missed four out of his five budget deadlines, and we’re supposed to believe that sequestration held them up? Riiiiight.
