GOP convention day 1 theme: Make America Safe Again

Late yesterday, the RNC announced its schedule for the first day of the Republican National Convention — and the themes for each day. The themes demonstrate just how much GOP leadership will embrace its presumptive nominee over the next four days; every day will be have “Make America ___ Again” theme, drawing from the branding that Donald Trump used almost from the very start. Today’s focus will be on security, with “Make America Safe Again” — mainly referencing national security with speakers such as General Michael Flynn and Sen. Tom Cotton. But with the events in Baton Rouge and Dallas fresh in everyone’s minds, Sheriff David Clarke’s speech might gain much more focus on restoring public safety than otherwise would be the case:

From attacks on our own soil and overseas to the tragedy in Benghazi, the policies of Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton have left us vulnerable. Our immigration system is broken, leaving our country open to security threats and the negative consequences of illegal immigration. A Donald Trump administration will listen to and learn from our nation’s heroes who have put themselves in harm’s way and pursue a national security strategy and foreign policy that will strengthen our military and make America safe again.

We’ll see some of the star power promised by Trump for the convention, too, from the ranks of reality TV. Duck Dynasty star Willie Robertson will speak, as will Antonio Sabato Jr and Scott Baio. The biggest star of the night will be Melania Trump, who will take the stage in prime time to speak for her husband. Political stars such as Senator Joni Ernst and House Homeland Security chair Michael McCaul will speak, too, to push the day’s theme.

The focus on national security will continue with three activists for immigration reform, a topic which will get a lot of focus in today’s schedule. Perhaps mothers might steal the show, however. Karen Vaughn is the mother of fallen SEAL Aaron Carson Vaughn, one of the thirty members of SEAL Team VI killed after the team’s action in killing Osama bin Laden was exposed. But viewers should keep an eye out especially for Pat Smith, the mother of Benghazi victim Sean Smith, who has kept the pressure on Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama for almost four years to account for the series of events that led to her son dying without any help on the way from the American military.  In a similar vein, murdered Border Patrol agent Brian Terry will have two of his siblings speaking today about failures in our border-security policy as well as Operation Fast and Furious. Stay tuned for both of those slots.

Other speakers include:

  • Marcus Luttrell, author of Lone Survivor
  • Darryl Glenn, the surprise nominee for US Senate in Colorado
  • Rudy Giuliani
  • Senator Jeff Sessions

The Townhall team will get to the venue early today to set up for coverage and work on the important stories of the day. Fortunately, the technology has improved in the eight years since my last convention coverage (I missed 2012 due to some family issues). As long as the bandwidth issues improve — we’ll see — we have some great tools to get immediate coverage. Keep an eye on the Hot Air Facebook page for instant video coverage on hot stories and interviews from the floor. I tested it out yesterday:
