For the last forty-one years, the New York Police and Fire Departments have held a charity hockey game, but no one would confuse them with professional hockey teams, right? Well … maybe. Last night’s game featured a 25-minute brawl that looked like a replay of Slap Shot, with everyone but the goalies getting in on the action.

Semi-serious question — who would they have called to break this up if it hadn’t gotten under control after almost a half-hour? New Jersey state troopers?

The NYPD and FDNY took the ice Sunday for their annual charity hockey game at Nassau Coliseum. And while it started out with the usual spirit of camaraderie, it didn’t take long for things to get out of hand.

Like, really out of hand.

As CBS New York reports, with the score tied 3-3 in the second period, the teams engaged in the type of full-out bench-clearing brawl that was typically seen in the NHL during the 1970s and ’80s, and is still occasionally waged in the minors today.

At one point almost all of the players on both sides were fighting, save for the goalies.

Neither agency would comment later on the brawl. The fan from one of the above videos later called into CBS New York tried to explain how the fight started, and was surprised that the players managed to finish the game:

Let’s hope that this raises a lot of money for their charities … and perhaps a few anger-management classes.
