Sunday morning talking heads

A tough task faces Mike Pompeo this fine Sunday morning, as he attempts to sell a national audience on the merits of a second nuclear summit with North Korea which he himself doesn’t believe in. Allegedly:

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, the man charged with leading the negotiations, has expressed frustration to allies about the lack of diplomatic progress and voiced concern that his boss will get outmaneuvered, according to a source with direct knowledge of the conversations. Other top officials, such as former Defense Secretary James Mattis, simply worked to keep as much distance from the negotiations as possible.

“There is not optimism in the administration,” said Ian Bremmer, founder and president of the Eurasia Group. “Pompeo is deeply skeptical that we are going to get anything of substance on denuclearization from Kim Jong Un, and Pompeo believes the North Koreans are just playing for time.”

Per Politico, some top aides worry “that Trump, eager to declare victory on the world stage, could make big concessions in exchange for empty promises of denuclearization.” POTUS has always seemed to want a reason to pull U.S. troops out of South Korea. Kim Jong Un surely knows it. What happens if he starts pushing Trump on it? Pompeo will sit down with “State of the Union” and “Fox News Sunday” to assure everyone that all is well.

Other guests are retreads. “This Week” offers a Russiagate double feature in the form of Adam Schiff and Andrew McCabe, both of whom you’ve heard opine about their suspicions involving Trump and Russia many times before. One potentially interesting guest today is Dem Rep. Jim Himes, who’s set for “Meet the Press.” Himes is the chairman of the New Democrat Coalition, a caucus of centrist Democrats — yes, they still theoretically exist — in the House. He’ll be pressed on the 2020 field’s leftward drift and the rise of Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. If you’re hungry for “Democratic civil war” material this morning, this is where you’re most likely to find it.
