Shania Twain: I'm sorry for saying I would have voted for Trump if I could have, even though I couldn't and didn't

Isn’t she a country star? Since when are country stars apologetic for being right-wing and populist? For cripes sake. She should be singing songs like “Ain’t Nothin’ Here To Drink (But Liberal Tears),” not “Feeling All Wokey in the Okefenokee.” She didn’t even vote for the guy!

I think if she were either not Canadian or not a pop-country specialist, she would have stood firm. In combination, though? Not a chance.

Apparently the mere desire to support Trump, even if unacted upon, now constitutes a sin in the eyes of the Church of Liberalism. Here’s what she told the Guardian:

It is not the only way in which she expresses her conservatism. If she had been able to vote in the US election, she would have plumped for Donald Trump, she says. “I would have voted for him because, even though he was offensive, he seemed honest. Do you want straight or polite? Not that you shouldn’t be able to have both. If I were voting, I just don’t want bullshit. I would have voted for a feeling that it was transparent. And politics has a reputation of not being that, right?”

Do you want straight or polite? When some fans started grumbling, she chose … polite:

“I do not hold any common moral beliefs with the current President” is a weird thing to say about a guy whom you preferred for the job of most powerful person in the world. Particularly if you’re a megastar turned comeback performer whose niche depends heavily on red-state audiences, maybe go easy about suggesting that you’re foursquare opposed to Trump morally. Fewer tracks like “Sneaking ‘Cross the Border (of Your Heart),” more like “Can’t Call It Cheating If There’s an NDA.”

Why is this a problem for Twain, anyway, when “Roseanne” is doing big ratings as a sympathetic look at a pro-Trump family? Roseanne Barr not only makes no secret of her Trump support, she’s making bank because of it. It’s not as if Barr’s career was rolling along, either. She’s a comeback performer as well. Is it as simple as the fact that Twain has a large gay fan base while Barr doesn’t?
