The looming end of the lockdown era is this morning’s hot topic on the Sunday shows. Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer is in the eye of the storm, having extended her state’s emergency order this week despite threats of a lawsuit from Republicans in the state legislature and demonstrations at the state capitol by protesters, some toting guns. She’ll chat with “State of the Union” about the timetable for Michigan businesses to reopen.

An interesting counterpart to Whitmer is Mississippi’s Republican Gov. Tate Reeves, who was slow to issue a stay-at-home order and was prepared to reopen some businesses this week. Emphasis on “was”: He scrapped his plan when this week’s data showed a rise in new cases and deaths in his home state. He’ll explain his thinking on “Fox News Sunday.” Deborah Birx will also speak to “Fox News Sunday” about whether some states are moving too quickly to get back to business, although it might not matter what she says. The evidence is mounting that more Americans are beginning to flout lockdowns whether or not orders have been lifted.

Elsewhere, the chairman of Gilead will talk with “Face the Nation” about the potential of the company’s antiviral drug, remdesivir, to improve outcomes in COVID-19 cases. And Justin Amash will sit down with “State of the Union” to discuss the imminent end of his congressional career and the start of a presidential odyssey as the Libertarian Party candidate that just might end with him handing Michigan to Trump this fall by playing spoiler for Joe Biden.
