For the second straight week a hurricane is the top story on the Sunday shows. The storm over Kavanaugh and what he may or may not have done 35 years ago to Christine Blasey Ford is this morning’s hot topic, of course, with neither one of the key players available for comment. Instead Democrats will turn to Rep. Anna Eshoo, who first received the fateful letter from Ford in July alleging that Kavanaugh had attempted to rape her. Eshoo will sit down with “Face the Nation” to reassure Americans that everything Ford has to say is true because, well, it just has to be. “Why not Dianne Feinstein instead?” you’re wondering. After all, she became the key congressional player in this drama after Eshoo passed the letter on to her. It’s possible that Feinstein will be scheduled at the last minute but who could blame Dems for keeping her away from cameras? She’s acted like a clown from the beginning of this clusterfark, holding Ford’s letter for months and then sharing it with the FBI only at the last moment. Result: Righties are angry at her for blindsiding Kavanaugh with what looks like a desperate cheap shot at the eleventh hour and lefties are angry at her for not pouncing on this months ago, when they would have had much more time to search for corroborating evidence and let public anger build.

As I write this on Saturday there are no White House officials booked to make the case for the defense, although Nikki Haley is set for “State of the Union” and will presumably be pressed to comment. There might be late bookings of Trump aides, of course, with Kellyanne Conway the likeliest choice to appear since Republicans crave female support for the nominee right now for obvious reasons. If there aren’t, it’ll fall to South Carolinians Lindsey Graham and Trey Gowdy to make the case for due process and the presumption of innocence, with Gowdy appearing on “Face the Nation” and Graham on “Fox News Sunday.” Both were prosecutors in former lives; I wonder if they ever saw themselves forced by circumstance to make the case publicly for giving the benefit of the doubt to an accused attempted rapist.

Oh, also on “State of the Union” will be Mazie Hirono, who’s earned a bunch of new progressive fans this week by dialing up the demagoguery on #MeToo’s behalf. The full line-up is at the AP.
