Sunday morning talking heads

The Sunday shows this morning are organized around a single theme: War. The star guest is Canadian PM Justin Trudeau, who suddenly finds himself in a trade war with the U.S. that’s apt to deepen if a NAFTA deal doesn’t get worked out soon, which seems probable. He’ll be on “Meet the Press” to remind American voters that Canada has fought alongside the U.S. in actual wars for decades and therefore probably shouldn’t be categorized as a national security threat for its trade policies, which is what Trump had to do under the law in order to justify steel and aluminum tariffs. Trump’s top economic advisor, Larry Kudlow, will counter on “This Week” and “Fox News Sunday” by insisting that this isn’t a trade war, it’s more like a trade … tiff between friends. It’ll all be ironed out soon, eh?

More war: The unfailingly soundbite-worthy Rudy Giuliani will stop by “Meet the Press” to update America on the war between Trump and Bob Mueller over Russiagate and to take a few shots at Trey Gowdy for spoiling POTUS’s “Spygate” narrative. An iron law of every Giuliani interview is that it must contain at least one damaging admission. Place your bets on what today’s will be. The GOP civil war is also a topic this morning, with John Kasich set for “Face the Nation” and yet another tease about a primary challenge to Trump in 2020 while Kevin McCarthy swings by “State of the Union” to discuss the possibility of a bruising leadership fight in the House for Speaker if Paul Ryan quits early.

Oh, and as for actual war, the on-again-off-again-on-again summit with North Korea will be a prime subject this a.m. although there are no White House aides scheduled to chat about it as of Saturday. Normally I’d guess John Bolton would turn up somewhere to discuss it, but after his “Libya model” comments last month pissed off the NorKs and imperiled the summit, the White House seems to be making him scarce. He didn’t even attend the Oval Office meeting with Kim Yong Chol on Friday. The full line-up is at the AP.
