The day the national anthem died

Time of death: February 18, 2018, approximately 7:55 p.m. ET. Location: Los Angeles, California. Cause: Murder with Fergaliciousness aforethought.

“A low chuckle rumbled through the sold-out arena after Fergie finished the first line of the song,” reported the AP, but by the end even the players were laughing. Watch Draymond Green at 1:55 of the clip below reduced from open-mouthed mystification to a fit of giggles.

How bad was it?

She wanted to do something different with the song, which is fine, but the different thing she ended up wanting to do was to sex it up, which is not so fine. What image is a sultry version of “The Star-Spangled Banner” supposed to conjure? George Washington getting laid? Bald eagles humping in the sky?

Congrats to her, I guess, for resisting the urge to work a “My Humps” medley in there.
