Just as it was starting, his campaign issued this forceful statement condemning the WaPo story as a “dangerous lie” but cagily sidestepping some of the specifics. He never gave alcohol to minors, he insists, and he never committed sexual misconduct. What about “dating” teenagers, including a 14-year-old? He doesn’t address that directly.

Then he went on Hannity’s radio show for what was expected to be a softball interview in which Moore would have an opportunity to reiterate his denials. And he did do that, at one point telling Hannity, “These allegations are completely false and misleading.” But Hannity kept after him for details, including whether he knew any of the accuser. He insisted that he’s never met Leigh Corfman, the woman who claims he molested her when she was 14. But two of the others, Debbie Gibson and Gloria Deason — yes, he remembers them. Hmmm. You never dated teenagers, though, when you were in your 30s, did you, asked Hannity? Moore:

In the interview, Moore did not deny the possibility he dated women who were younger than 18 when he was in his 30s, but pointed out that most of the women in their accounts to the newspaper do not claim inappropriate sexual behavior…

When asked if he remembered dating any woman who was in her late teens while he was a 30-something, Moore said, “not generally, no” and that it would be “out of my customary behavior.”

“I don’t remember that, and I don’t remember ever dating any girl without the permission of her mother,” he added.

The expected answer to “Did you date teenagers as a thirtysomething? would have been “Of course not, you moron.” Instead we got somethingh along the lines of “I don’t remember but it doesn’t sound like something I would do.” Double hmmm. And what’s that bit about asking for mom’s permission? Why would an adult man need to do that if he was dating adult women?

Moore also said “We have some evidence of collusion here” and that he’d be presenting it soon. I assume that’s a reference to the fact that Gibson was a sign-language interpreter for Joe Biden and a volunteer for Moore’s opponent, Doug Jones. WaPo didn’t mention that in their story and they should have; it’s relevant to the reader’s assessment of the accuser’s credibility. But remember, Gibson’s account of her time with Moore was the least troubling in the WaPo story. She said they dated for two or three months when Moore was 34 and she was 17 and that “he took her to his house, read her poetry and played his guitar. She says he kissed her once in his bedroom and once by the pool at a local country club.” She actually told the paper that “nothing bad happened” and that her mother thought Moore was a catch. If she’s a Democratic plant lying for her party, why wasn’t her lie way more salacious? “I was 12 and he raped me repeatedly,” etc? The fact that one of Moore’s accusers is a Democrat isn’t inherently disqualifying.

David Horowitz has landed on the position that Moore is in fact a child molester but, well, we need to elect him anyway:

In my view Moore is guilty as accused. But 1) it happened 30 years ago, & 2) he can't be removed from the ballot, & 3) electing a Dem strengthens a party that defends these criminals: Obama, the Clintons, Holder, Lynch, Abedin, Cheryl Mills etc. &their crimes are far far worse

As for Moore not knowing Corfman, the 14-year-old, he’d better hope she doesn’t have a photo of the two of them together. Presumably WaPo would have seen it already if she had, but if she digs one up after he swore up and down today that they’ve never met, he’s finished. In the meantime, here’s a former boyfriend of hers claiming that Corfman told him nearly 10 years ago about her sexual encounter with Moore as a kid. Exit question: Did Hannity hit Moore hard because certain friends in high places who didn’t endorse Moore in the primary are hoping to push him out and somehow get a more electable Republican candidate in the race?
