#AlwaysTrump: Sure, I'll attend the convention and speak on Trump's behalf, says ... Marco Rubio

Marco farking Rubio. A guy who once insisted Trump was “a con artist who should not get access to nuclear codes,” and by “once” I mean “about 10 weeks ago.” A guy who was so #NeverTrump in the primaries, he actually sold his own #NeverTrump merchandise.

The best line here is “I’d most certainly be honored to be considered”:

Marco Rubio says he plans to attend the Republican convention, will release his delegates to vote for Donald Trump and would be willing to speak on Trump’s behalf.

“I want to be helpful. I don’t want to be harmful, because I don’t want Hillary Clinton to be president,” Rubio told CNN’s Jake Tapper in an interview.

“Look, my policy differences with Donald Trump — I spent 11 months talking about them. So I think they’re well understood,” Rubio said. “That said … I don’t want Hillary Clinton to be president. If there’s something I can do to help that from happening, and it’s helpful to the cause, I’d most certainly be honored to be considered for that.”…

Asked specifically if he’d speak on Trump’s behalf if Trump asked, Rubio said: “Yes.”

“Policy differences”? “The party of Lincoln and Reagan and the presidency of the United States will never be held by a con artist,” said Rubio just 87 days ago. Go figure that a guy who egregiously BS’d voters about immigration in 2010 would also egregiously BS them about his deeply held anti-Trump conservative principles. I hope he reconsiders and runs for Senate again now so that we can primary him.

In other news, he’s reportedly open to running for Senate again. Sort of. A little:

National Republicans are growing increasingly worried about their chances in Florida’s open Senate race. And Rubio β€” adamant until now that he will seek a job in the private sector after his failed bid for president β€” is leaving the door open, if only a millimeter.

The Florida senator on Thursday said it was “unlikely” he would jump into the race, even as fellow Republicans began openly urging him to. A chaotic, five-way Republican primary has stoked worries that Rubio’s seat will flip to Democrats…

“Republicans are in a very bad place,” said a Republican strategist who has seen polling indicating Murphy’s name recognition is increasing. Florida is “currently Republicans’ No. 1 problem in the Senate” and “somebody needs to start thinking about the general election.”

Mitch McConnell asked for a show of hands at today’s GOP caucus lunch on who’d like to see Rubio run again. Reportedly every hand shot up. Roger Wicker, who’s running the NRSC this year, pulled Rubio aside later to make the pitch and told reporters that the “draft Rubio” effort is a “very real development.” If you don’t understand why, read this. There’s a big field of Republicans in the Florida primary who are destined to spend lots of money killing each other and none of them has Rubio’s recognition. In a poll taken a few weeks ago, Rubio was the only one who led Democrat Patrick Murphy head-to-head. If Trump stumbles against Hillary this fall and there’s a big blue trend, incumbency may be the only hope of holding this seat. Frankly, the fact that Rubio’s now telling Jake Tapper he’s prepared to kneel before Zod at the convention is the best sign yet that he’s thinking about it. If he’s running, he needs to rebuild some goodwill with Florida’s many, many Trump voters.

I think he has to run. The only way the bizarre Shakespearean drama that was Rubio’s presidential campaign can end now is with him heroically agreeing to return to battle to help his party save the Senate, only to get ironically and comically obliterated in November as part of a national Democratic wave generated by the public turning against the “con artist.” Add that outcome to the giant pile of what-if alternate histories created when Rubio choked at the New Hampshire debate opposite Chris Christie.

Ah well. This pathetic cave at least creates a golden opportunity for Cruz to show up at the convention now in a “TRUCK FUMP” t-shirt. Exit question: How fun would it be to watch Secretary of Defense Rubio carrying out President Trump’s orders?
