A rare political ad that’s worth watching. It’s not because of the conceit — although that’s clever, a two-birds-with-one-stone shot publicizing Trump’s vulnerabilities in the general election while goofing on the ruthlessness of Clintonworld. It’s because of the stunt-casting. Strangely enough, despite Hillary having been world famous for 25 years now, you rarely see a decent lookalike of her in media. Team Cruz found one. The resemblance isn’t spot-on but it’s above average, and that evil glower compensates for a lot of discrepancies. (The actress must sound nothing like Hillary or else they’d have given her at least one line.) The showstopper, though, is “Huma Abedin,” who’s a dead ringer for the real Huma. It’s a testament to how (in)famous she’s become on the right, primarily as the Clintons’ top toady and secondarily as Mrs. Anthony Weiner, that Team Cruz would have thought to hunt around for a lookalike to play her instead of casting someone generic as the aide-in-chief. But maybe they felt they had no choice. If you need a single person to embody the bubble of cutthroat flunkies that surrounds the Clintons, what better shorthand could you find? If they tried to cast a Sid Blumenthal lookalike, would anyone, including the real Sid, get the allusion?

Even so, a few quibbles. One: How do you do an ad like this without a goof on Bill? His voice is one of the most recognizable in America, and also one of the easiest to imitate. If Trump’s team were making this ad, they would have had a Bill impressionist wander into the meeting without any pants and say, “I can’t wait to get back in the White House!” Two: You would have thought they would have made more of Trump’s chumminess with the Clintons pre-election. There’s a nod to it at the end in the now-famous photo of them together at his wedding, but plenty of Cruz fans will tell you even now (implausibly, but whatever) that Trump is essentially a stalking horse to get another Clinton elected. The punchline to this spot could easily have been Hillary laughing at the thought that her “plant” is about to win the nomination. Three: Um, what’s with the old-timey slide projector, guys? This woman had her own private e-mail server. She’s using laptops and powerpoints for presentations like this, for cripes sake.

Exit question: Who’s going to play the Cruz lookalike in the inevitable Team Trump retaliation ad? It’s going to be the girl from the “Maury” show, isn’t it?
