Report: As many as seven wounded in shooting at Washington school; Update: One victim dead; Update: Motive?

That’s Marysville in Washington state, to be clear, not Washington, D.C.

The gunman is reportedly dead by suicide. That’s the only confirmed death at the moment but rumors are floating around that three others have been killed. We all know the rules of early coverage of mass shootings, unfortunately: The first reports are often wrong so take everything with a grain of salt for now.

There’s usually an initial, and erroneous, report of multiple shooters when this happens but no one seems to be suggesting that in this case. The lone suspect is, or was, a student, of course:

A 17-year-old student told NBC News that her brother, a freshman, texted her that a student opened fire in the cafeteria.

“I was in my classroom and someone pulled the fire alarm and we thought it was a fire drill and we ran out and they told us to go back in a classroom,” said the student, Cindy Rodriguez. “We’re scared.”

Teacher Keri Austin told MSNBC that the principal “has come over the loudspeaker two or three times just telling us there was a shooting…stay on lockdown.”

Here’s the live feed from the Seattle NBC affiliate. Stand by for updates.

Update: Did he target a specific group of students for some reason?

Update: Police say two are dead, including the gunman.

Update: Worse and worse: According to an update here, three victims are in critical condition. Not surprising if the report about the cafeteria shooting is true. It sounds like the shooter fired from point blank range.

Update: For what it’s worth:

Other students identified the shooter as Jaylen Fryberg.

Jarron Webb, 15, said the shooter was angry at a girl who would not date him, and that the girl was one of the people shot.  He said he believes one of the victims was his friend since kindergarten.

Update: People on Twitter are pointing to this as the shooter’s account. There’s no way to confirm that, of course, but the name is the same, the age looks right, and the owner of the account has a photo of himself posted in Native American headdress. Fryberg, the shooter, was reportedly a Native American member of the Tulalip tribe. It’s not a newly created account either, as sometimes happens right after a shooting by people who want to spoof the shooter. This NBC story suggests that he might have been angry about a racist comment that was recently made to him, but the most recent entries on the Twitter account do point to more of a jealousy motive. The last tweet, posted yesterday: “It won’t last…. It’ll never last….”
