NBC News's newest contributor: David Axelrod, of course

Look on the bright side. If anything, he’ll drag MSNBC to the right.

Seriously, though, in the modern media age no self-respecting cable news network is complete without a left-wing former presidential advisor. MSNBC has Ax and Gibbs, CNN had Carville and Donna Brazile. Fox has Karl Rove.

David Axelrod, former White House senior advisor and senior strategist for President Obama’s 2008 and 2012 campaigns, has joined NBC News and MSNBC as a senior political analyst. He will contribute frequently across all broadcasts and platforms of both networks.

For nearly three decades, Axelrod guided successful campaigns at every level on the ballot. He began his career as a journalist, spending eight years as a political writer, columnist and City Hall bureau chief for the Chicago Tribune before stepping into politics in 1984. He founded Axelrod and Associates, a political and media consulting firm which became AKPD Message and Media. He later founded the communications management firm ASGK Public Strategies…

The NBC News and MSNBC roster of esteemed political analysts also includes Steve Schmidt, former senior campaign strategist and advisor to the 2008 Presidential campaign of Senator John McCain, Michael Steele former chairman of the Republican National Committee and two-term former Governor of Pennsylvania Ed Rendell.

Schmidt, Steele, Rendell, and now Axelrod. They used to run the gamut from A to lowercase a; now they’re running it all the way to B. Congrats to NBC on diversifying their line-up. There’s no more perfect complement to Politico’s splashy feature this morning about Obama as the media’s puppetmaster than finding out his top strategist will now be a salaried employee for a major TV news bureau. When Chuck Todd’s done, maybe they’ll skip the middleman and hire Valerie Jarrett to be White House correspondent. Question for the WH press corps: Why object to O giving interviews to People magazine instead of to NBC? Judging by the staffing alone, People’s a more independent outfit.
