Why not? Relations between Israel and Turkey are doomed as long as Erdogan and his merry band of Islamists are in charge, so there’s really nothing to lose with a provocation in reverse. Assuming this comes off, the next time that cretin points his finger, the whole world will know just how much blood is on it.

Which, admittedly, won’t make them care.

Student Union chairman Boaz Torporovsky, who has been leading the reverse flotilla charge, told The Jerusalem Post on Monday, “Hundreds of people have volunteered for the flotilla, and many more are contacting us all the time for ways they can help.

“Our plan is to deliver much-needed humanitarian assistance to the Kurds of Turkey, who by the way outnumber Israelis and Palestinians combined,” he said…

Another sea-bound venture is being organized in an effort to draw attention to Turkey’s own controversial policies – this time to Cyprus, to “call for an end to the Turkish occupation” of the island’s northern half – and is being organized by Meretz activist Pinchas Har-Zahav, and his son Haim, who has also signed on for the voyage…

Har-Zahav added that the ship’s passengers were not looking for a violent confrontation and if told to turn back, they would.

“But we feel that it’s important for us to show and remind the world that Turkey is not a righteous country, but a near-rogue state, and that we, the Israeli people, are not suckers.”

According to Torporovsky, they need three things to pull it off: “Money, logistical support and balls – and we’ve got the last two things covered.” To which I reply: PayPal. Seriously, this is a blogosphere fundraising cause celebre waiting to happen; you won’t get a dime from the left, but righty response should be such that you won’t need it. Plus, there’s a bona fide humanitarian angle. Michael Totten was in Turkish Kurdistan in 2006, when Iraq was approaching its post-war nadir, and pronounced it an unmitigated disaster even by Iraqi standards. Actual quote: “When we crossed the border into Iraq, respect for human rights and the standard of living increased dramatically.” My one worry is that Turkish troops might end up boarding the ships and that, unlike the IDF, they won’t be carrying paintball guns as their primary weapons. Ask an Armenian about that, if you can find one.

As I write this, the Telegraph is reporting that Israel’s close to an agreement to allow more aid into Gaza in exchange for a “watered-down” international investigation into the flotilla raid. That’s a bizarre compromise, if true: Not only does it make Israel look like they’re hiding something, but it contradicts the idea oft-mentioned by Israelis since the raid occurred that no matter what they do, they’ll be blamed anyway. If that’s true, and it surely is, why care about the investigation enough to sacrifice something for it? A “watered-down” probe that clears them will simply be dismissed by their enemies as a show trial that was held in exchange for Gaza concessions, and needless to say, it’ll be used by Erdogan to great effect in building resentment among Turkish voters. Can’t win, so don’t try — unless, that is, Netanyahu is looking for a pretext at this point to relax some aid restrictions but needs to save face. This lets him do that, I guess.
