There are gaffes and there are gaffes. Obama declaring Eau Claire, Wisconsin, the 51st 58th state? A gaffe, silly and harmless. The governor of Virginia not knowing where his own state’s borders are? A gaffe, and not the first Quayle-esque moment he’s had lately. So unlikely is this, in fact, that even after checking multiple maps I’m still not convinced he could have blown it. Surely there’s some stray island that belongs to Delaware in sufficient proximity to northern Virginia that he’s got some cover here, no? Or does sharing a peninsula now qualify as “bordering”? Proof positive that as prone as Biden is to verbal mishaps, it could have been worse.
